Wow Ship that is cool. Right now I play guitar for a living but I am too old to keep doing it forever, and a down economy hits the entertainment sector very hard. We have ahd several places that normally book us close, and many more have stopped booking live bands. Last year we were turning down gigs and I played enough to live at least a swell as anyone with a typical day job, this year I am broke from gig to gig and barely treading water.

So.....

I am about to start my resident training at National Training. I just completed the PC part 33 lessons on the legal stuff and inspections, etc... In June or July at the latest I will be spending 3 weeks in Green Cove Springs Florida (which is basically a long bicycle or short car ride from my home in Fleming Island) Driving rigs, then they say they can place me in a job.

I really don't know if I want to go over the road like you are doing. I have some friends here that drive local routes and others that just drive dump trucks or concrete trucks. Not sure if I can leave my kid for that long or quit playing music professionally. I am hoping that I can find some sort of route that leaves me home every night, or at least on weekends, so that I can at least play part time. If I absolutely must, I will take an OTR job, as a last resort, but I was only doing this to get some real world job security. At 38 I have very little actual job experience, having spent most of my life as a musician and of course that other illegal business I had, which I can't really put on a resume.

Anyhow congratz on getting in and being successful at it in such a short time. You never know the OTR money or the chance to become an owner operator may entice me to let my music fall into the realm of being a hobby or part time job and I may just jump into a cab full time.

One thing, how much time do you spend doing things other than sleep or drive? I know you can't drive more than 11 hours without a 10 hour break, so how does a typical OTR day break down for you?

its a slight misconception, that we can only drive 11 hours a day...and in saying that i mean ,that we think of a day in the conventional way

my day can go many ways, so i will give a recentl example

wake up in Rhode island, at 1130pm,
drive to amsterdam new york,
make delivery at 9am,
and get load assignment to pick up, in Avon new york
, drive for 2 hours, stop, and take 10 hour break, (sleep/food)
drive the rest of the way to Avon,
and make pickup at 1045pm, and
drive out of new york state, thru PA, ohio,
and shut down in bowling green Kentucky
, wake up and leave 10 hrs later
and drive to hurricane mills TN,
and switch loads with another driver
, drive an aditional 390 miles, and
shut down in max meadows VA (on I81 )
get up and roll around 5pm and roll all nite to brooklyn NY
, and deliver my chicken boobs

then roll to nearest place to legally park, and sign onto darkspace and fancast

u will have personal time, but the way it ussually breaks down is

drive 11
10 to sleep shower eat
drive 11
10 to sleep shower eat
drive 11
10 to sleep shower eat
repeat untill u have used the 70 hours u can legally use
34 hour restart to gain another 70
this time is used to do laundry/minor housekeeping stuff etc.

if u are thinking about becoming a driver, i wish u luck, it is the hardest thing i have ever done in my life...but also the most rewarding

as the man would say " i Seen some stuff that would turn your crap white!"

well, i had a rite of passage yesterday

had my first steer tire blowout, while going 65mph on I81 in virginia

was able to maintain control of the truck, and get across 2 lanes that just happen to be merging from the right at the time of the blowout, and safely onto the shoulder

only thing that suffered was my small clothes

and i suspect the small clothes of the car that just happen to be right next to the tire when it blew also had problems

hi all, its been a long time

alot has happened, i am uncertain if i have posted it, but i am now a "certified driver trainer" meaning i get students on my truck for up to 5 weeks, while i teach them how to operate a OTR truck

but thats neither here nor there, GOOD NEWS

I am about to be an OWNER OPERATOR

meaning i am about to buy my own truck

not really much changes as i have been a lease driver for 2 years, but now i can brag and stuff and install stuff in my truck that i couldnt before
(they get all pissy if u install a toilet in a campnay owned truck)

and i can get the truck painted how ever i want....well i own it, i can pee on the dash board if i want to...not that i would.

been doing the same thing for a while now, have had a few students, some better than others, i wont tell which was which, as they all know about darkspace, and i dont want them figuring out who i am talking about

lots of amusing things happened, non of which i can talk about here for obvious reasons..."Do i smell baby powder??" lol

normal conversation with student on mountain

Me: your using to much brake pressure (looking at brake pressure gauge)

student: (looks at gauge) no im not

Me: yes, you are (looking in rear view mirror)

student: i have to use this much, the RPMs are getting to high(looking at rpm gauge)

Me: use less brake pressure (looking in rear view mirror)

student: i cant Use less brake pressure the rpms are way up!! and why are u staring into the rear view mirror!!!

Me: yes u can use less, your rpms are only 1500 and i am watching the trailer , as any min its going to burst into flame as u are using to much brake pressure

student: why would u say something like that, i am nervous enough as it is, and i dont need u giving me a hard time like that...

Me: pull over and put on your hazard lights, your brakes are on fire

arent trainees fun!!!!

anyway someone of my former students are doing really well, while others went home during their next stage of training, mostly because of family concerns, not everyone is able to stay away from home for 6 -8 weeks at a time

I on the other hand am buying a kenworth, cause i am NUMBER ONE and i like poverty, which is the end result in this economy for an owner operator

the freight i have been hualing hasnt changed, meat, produce, etc, not much else, although i did haul some electronics this winter that needed climate controll in route, i learned you should always check for an adams apple, and New mexico, SUX cause they closed all their rest areas this winter, although i dont know why

anyway, will update as soon as i can,

PS am buying the truck in march
