After aguring on gamefaqs about orbital railguns being useful and posting a link about space weapons they had this good point.

ase note that it is relative velocity that is important. If your ship is quote "standing still" unquote, and the enemy is tearing past you at seven kilometers per second, if you leisurely toss an empty beer can into the path of the enemy, the relative velocity is 7 km/s and the beer can will do severe damage to the enemy ship (if the beer can masses 0.1 kilogram, it will do 2,450,000 Joules of damage). So even though the beer can has practically zero velocity from your standpoint, from the standpoint of the soon-to-be-noseless ship the can is has the velocity of a bat-out-of-you-know-where.

So as you can see if you run into a object in space and your going really fast... then well your ship is going to hate you for a while. So any junk you drop could be used as a weapon if your opponet is going fast enough. However it should be depedet on the size and numbers of that object. For example if I drop particle cannon in the way of a moving ship. It will hurt them but only there armour/shields. If I drop a bunch of them in someones way then you expect some hull damage.

Well I agree with the theory..relative speed etc.I still think I would rather shoot my weapons at the enemy rather than say.... drop a particle cannon in their path.

It's my humble opinion that weapons are far more effective when fired at an enemy.....

What would be the point of having all these high tech weapons if it would be just as effective to say....toss a large boulder out the airlock, as your enemy flies past.Maybe some pointed sticks while your at it.lol.
