a tactic in early game,
when all the ships on the feild are small, then attack the enemies around the planets as much as possible. this effectivly slows the progression of the enemies planets and allows you to put dessies on the feild before the enemy has a planet that is almost ready for a shipyard.
Use the agility of small ships to your advantage. I was playing in an ICC sesnsor frig (the one with the default guass cannons) and i focused on taking evasive action. I attacked the ugto and singlehandedly started tearing apart the ugto ships. also, focus on engies and transports (including extractors). this not only negates the ability for the enemy to build up their planets but also (if you can stay until you run out of ammo as i did) allows you to destroy mining other then planetary mining and can hold them back from taking planets.
early aggression against engies and transports is a good idea, if you have the skill to still go 1 on 1 and stay afterward because your still alive with reasonable hp.

wise words for someone who rambos around in scen, complains about how long it takes for the SY to be finished, takes his ship when the SY is finished, ignores orders to stay with the miner(s) and just goes afk for 10 minutes without telling his team and therefore pissing his teammates off because he doesn't react when they could use his help. really. wise words -.- [ This Message was edited by: Thernhoghas on 2010-10-22 09:09 ]

hitting enemy engis, not mining, and then taking a ship is a characteristic i hate among any player, im not pointing out any names but you should at least mine for your ship, or defend when needed...not going out to pop enemy engis for sadistic fun/ego stroking/pres bumping.
dont shove the "if you care about your engis defend them" quote at me, any competent player can beeline to the engi, smack it dead, then run away. the engi just is too weak in the defence and hp department.
i propose we buff engi hp and armor/shields, but not buff its weapons. This way it can survive a beeline and its backup can kill the enemy before the engi gets killed. Without good weapons or speed, it still can't fend off attacks on its own.
if you believe you can fend off an attacker before they trash the engi, without planet support (its the beginning of scen) think it this way. Is it faster with frig weapons to kill another frig, or an engi?

Thank you IANF. please ignore the abuse these tactics are useful and i know this first hand (my fleet specialises in small craft). the results can be disastorous for the opposing team and often they just cant hit you in time and flee or are destroyed.
Thanks to all who put positive input in to this thread. to those of you who wish to criticise other players don't bother posting here.
Yours sincerely,
Howlingwind.

SpaceAdmiral. i would argue the opposite. these tactics like hitting engines are some of the only advantages small craft have over big ones and whilst it might be annoying to others it is very fun. Also im sure everyone has things they are annoyed by for example i find station jumps annoying however i recognise their right to do so. still a good idea for engine defence is to allow some lasers on point defence. missles stand less chance of getting past if they are shot by your rear weapons first.

I'm sorry for that but in 0.1% of the cases when someone really pisses me of I just can't resist the urge to complain somewhere where many people can see it, not just a few other.

From experience, Big ships ARE NOT THE 100% GUARENTEED SOLUTION.
do not be afraid to get in to a cruiser or destroyer. they are just as lethal in their own way.
anyone remember that time when icc was mobbing dreds in scouts? fun times.

Missile Frigates*
And yes those were fun days. But seems UGTO are stubborn and like their dreads and stations.
But that's okay. Their dreads and stations make for good pres farms for us Luthies now.
The flow of tears of UGTO pilots fuels our drive to kill them all from the darkness of space before we are gone again. Waiting for the next victim to foolish dangle their hulls across our path.

Something basic to add. Always keep an eye on how far off opponents are in battle. this can be hard when your frenzying to apply your own firepower and there are often so many little red arrows on the edge of your screen but it is important. If you accidently let an opponent to close he can blow you appart with laser weapons. dont let this happen.
I try to spot distances by sliding my mouse pointer over the arrows and looking at the names and distance as it appears.

Expanding on my situational awareness point last time i have suggested that the game introduce a mini map for use whilst battling as opposed to pressing f2 and losing control of the ship. if you think this is a good idea please please please show your support on the post Mini map please. I will post a link in a moment.
