DarkSpace Free Trial to Start Monday
- Posted on July 12th, 2002 - 15:07 by Faustus
Austin, Texas, July 12th, 2002. Palestar Inc. and Playnet.com announced Friday that a free trial for the massively multiplayer online game DarkSpace will begin July 15th, 12:00CST and run until July 22nd, 12:00CST. During the free trial, ALL DarkSpace account holders will be able to play with no limitations; they will have the ability to gain prestige, rank, and join all available servers.

“This free trial is a great opportunity for new players, or those who have tried DarkSpace in the past, to check out all the new features and fixes we’ve added over the last few months,” commented Richard “Faustus” Lyle, Palestar’s President and Lead Programmer.

This free trial occurs after the release of version 1.476, which added several new features and fixes to DarkSpace. Major improvements to the lobby have been implemented to make the game more accessible and feature complete, including idle detection and password protected chat rooms. The server and client code has been greatly stabilized as well.
Version 1.476 Release
- Posted on July 11th, 2002 - 16:22 by Faustus
Version 1.476 will be released tomorrow, July 12th at 11:00AM CST. This release may require all servers to be offline for up to 1 hour, as we are updating the main servers. Check the Development Log for full details on the changes contained in this release.

- Beta code is now tested in a seperate lobby, with seperate prestige, rank, ship and item storage. This will require those wishing to continue beta testing to download and install a special beta client which will be available in the downloads section tomorrow.

- All client configuration information has been moved to a config.ini file located in your DarkSpace install directory. This change, will require you accept the EULA again, and run setup again after you have downloaded the new update. Lobby emotions are the only item imported from the registry into the config.ini.

- You can now password protect your chat room. However, moderators can enter password protected chat rooms without knowing the password.

- Chat rooms can now be moderated, which means all players who enter the room are automatically muted.

- The lobby has undergone an interface overhaul. You'll notice several new buttons, and some buttons have been moved to be more intutive.

- /away and /back commands have been implemented. Players who are idle for more than 5 minutes or minimize the lobby window are automatically set away, greying their icon in the lobby.

Version 1.474
- Posted on July 5th, 2002 - 09:03 by Faustus
We anticpate version 1.474 will be released on monday at the latest, if possible it will be released later today or over the weekend.

This version fixes some serious syncronization/lag issues caused by a flaw in the client and server code. Everyone should keep in mind that there will always be some lag and jumping in game, after all we have no control over the routers between you and our servers. This version also fixes the K'Luth interdictor problem by changing the cloaking device slot type to SPECIAL.

Hope everyone had a happy and safe 4th of July....
Lag...
- Posted on June 29th, 2002 - 08:49 by Faustus
We are aware of the issue with lag and are working to address the issue ASAP with a new patch no later than Monday. We apologize for the inconvenience and hope that you will be patient until the lag can be fixed with a patch.

Rest assured we try our hardest to avoid issues such as this through beta testing. However, it is not always possible to identify these problems until they appear in the real world.

NOTE: new code is being tested in beta to address the lag issues. Please help test the beta code by running setup, turning on "Beta Mode" and joining the "palestar.com - beta" server.
Flux Wave
- Posted on June 28th, 2002 - 19:38 by Faustus
All administrators have been instructed to reset the ships / storage of any players found using a faction specific device not belonging to their faction. This includes the Flux Wave (UGTO), Pulse Shield (ICC), Pulse Beam(ICC), and Flux Beam(UGTO).

All players are instructed to sell those devices at the nearest star port.
Version 1.473 Release
- Posted on June 28th, 2002 - 10:28 by Faustus
We anticpate version 1.473 will be released later today, June 28th, 2002. See the Development Log for full details on what has been changed.

- The imbalance created by the use of technology between the factions has hit a critical point. This has required the implementation of new code which restricts the use of certain devices to one faction only. The cloaking and auto repair devices remain K'Luth technology only. The ICC retain shields, pulse shield, and pulse beam as devices they can only use. The flux beam and flux wave can now only be used by the UGTO.

- Clients who exit the game without taking their ship back to the home gate are now left in-game for 60 seconds. If their ship is destroyed, then those points are counted against the player. This was done to prevent players from logging out right before they are destroyed.

- Several fixes have been implemented to fix lag in the Metaverse.

The metaverse will NOT be reset after this release. Ships with flux waves already equipped will not be removed except by natural selection.
