Server Problems...
- Posted on March 23rd, 2004 - 13:03 by Faustus
We experienced some server problems this morning, starting off with the breaker at our ISP tripping and cutting off power to all our machines. Once we got the machines back online, we found out that the database and Metaverse maps had been corrupted due to the power failure. We repaired the database, however we had to upload a new Metaverse map since it could not be repaired.

The new Metaverse map is 31+ systems in size. We had planned to use this map when 1.481 was released but due to some early problems with CPU usage, we fell back to a simpler smaller map. Now that the CPU usage and load-balance issues have been resolved, we have moved over to this bigger and newer map created by our very own "Reason".

UPDATE: The power went out again at 1AM this morning, and the servers did not come back online until around 10AM this morning. The faulty powerstrip has been replaced, and another strip has been added to split the load.
Online Manual Rewritten
- Posted on March 22nd, 2004 - 01:09 by Demorian
It is PaleStar's pleasure to announce that DarkSpace's Online Manual is now compatible with version 1.481!

It took longer than expected, but the task is complete and it is our sincerest hope that the new Manual will fill the helpful shoes that the previous version could not. We are grateful for everyone's understanding.

The new Manual is formatted so that new players can learn as they read without having to skip around, and also so that seasoned veterans can easily find the section they need to read up on. It was also an objective to be more complete than the previous incarnation was. We would appreciate feedback as we go into the proofreading stages.

We would like to ask one more time for everyone's patience over the next few days as we fill in the final holes and make this new work as complete as possible for everyone's enjoyment. Thanks!

Version 1.481 Released / Free Trial
- Posted on March 2nd, 2004 - 19:14 by Faustus
Austin, TX, March 1st, 2004. Palestar is happy to announce the release of version 1.481 of DarkSpace, which has been in development for over a year, and a Free Trial for the next two weeks.

The latest version is highly anticipated as it contains a complete new server backend and numerous new features and fixes, including…

- Completely new fully distributed Server Backend, which performs dynamic load balancing and speed improvements.

- New structures, including the Shipyard, which allows players to spawn from planets, Quantum Generator and Defense / Fighter Bases II/III.
- New ground unit Heavy Infantry. Additionally, the maximum number of ground units per planet has been increased to 32, units can now stack, and a new order system has been implemented.

- Revised technology system, in which all planets now have a technology level instead of a research tree. This system is easier to understand and use than the previous technology tree system, and doesn’t require player intervention to fully develop a planets technology level.

- Revised and improved Tutorial.

- User interface has been overhauled and made more accessible.

- Trade routes are now automatically created based on supply and demand economics.

- New WORM HOLE DEVICE allows ships to travel instantly from one location in the universe to another.

- Numerous bug fixes and optimizations…

The free trial will run from March 2nd, 2004 until March 17th, 2004. All accounts will have full access to the entire game during this time, with no subscription needed.

Kamikaze Chicken, Barthezzz, Demorian, and Serj have all received 1 month coupons for their submissions as well, it was a very hard choice to narrow it down to one winner. Thanks to everyone who submitted a banner, and sorry to those who didn't make the top 5.
