"5 minutes!", the Chief gestured to the LT. He tapped on the hatch of the Assault Pod.

Lt Snyder nodded and gave a thumbs up back to the Chief before closing the hatch and sealing it. As he started to strap himself into his seat, he announced, "5 minutes, people! Saddle up!"

I strapped myself into the acceleration seat and ran a final self check on my equipment. Checking that the safety was on, I pulled back on the bolt handle on my assault rifle to chamber a round, then thumbed the selector for 3 round bursts. Next, my combat webbing: 2 concussion nades hung from their safety pins on the slot-like left breast pockets. 2 frag nades hung from the right. Lower down, I felt for the three additional 50-round magazines on my waistpouches on the left. On the right I grabbed for the standard issue combat knife and 2 flashbangs. A quick check on the pocket above the magazines revealed my personal field dressing.

Some things never change. From the history books, I read that grunts like me were still carrying pretty much what 20th century troopers used to. Well, except for some up to date equipment. Flipping down the faceshield of my combat helmet, which resembled a 21st century modular or "flip-face" motorcycle helmet, I activated the helmet mounted display and sync'ed it with the platoon battlenet. The helmet ran through its self-test, first polarizing the visor into anti-flash mode, then through IR and low-light/night-vision modes, before switching back to normal mode. Then the heading display appeared at the top of my peripheral vision, which I mentally turned off with a single thought command. We wouldn't be needing that where we were about to go.

This was what separated us from the troopers back in the day. While small arms technology didn't stray too far from what it was a century back, information technology did. The standard issue combat helmet was equipped with an array of motion and thermal sensors (some mounted on the grunt's combat webbing and uplinked to the helmet) to scan the environment and provide better situational awareness to the wearer. It also came with a low-power radar good for about a couple hundred feet in range. All this was relayed back to the grunt in a comprehensive HMD projected onto his visor. It could detect contacts and threats, then put a reticle around it and place range and heading info above it. An overhead map display could be called up if the helmet was linked to ships or satellites in orbit, or if nav data was preloaded. The radar could also detect incoming fire and trace their bearing back towards the point of origin. Everything was controlled by the wearer's thoughts through a series of receptors mounted inside the helmet.

Lastly, I ran a data uplink check to the rest of the platoon and initiated the voice comms tests. Satisfied that everything was good, I raised the visor, relaxed into the seat and closed my eyes, trying to clear my thoughts. Pre-insertion jitters were a common thing just before you launched. It happened to everyone, even the most seasoned vets. I tried to breathe in slowly and deeply to calm myself. Somewhere to the left, Spec. Thompson was uttering Psalm 23:4; his usual routine before a combat drop.


About an hour ago our ship, the Assault Dreadnought CSS Stygia had jumped into the vicinity of Pyron, located in the contested Dres-Kona system, as part of a multi fleet task force to retake the system from the UGTO. It had been a bitter and bloody month long campaign, recapturing the system planet by planet from the UGTO. With some luck, and a lot of tenacity, the ICC had managed to reclaim most of Dres-Kona. And now we were here to retake the Kona cluster, the last occupied planets in the system and push the UGTO back into the Kaus Borealis system.

The Stygia and its support ships were the spearhead of Battlegroup Two, assigned to Task Force Charon. Charon was part of Operation Hades, which included three other Task Forces; Styx, Acheron and Erebus. The objective was to retake the Kona cluster via a coordinated strike on all three planets. Charon and Styx were to jump in simultaneously on opposite ends of Kona's two moons, Pyron and Oceania, in a move designed to split the defending forces up. The much larger Task Force Acheron would then jump directly into Kona's vicinity not long after, flanking the divided UGTO groups. Erebus was the insurance policy, consisting mainly of missile ships, minelayers and interdictors. Their objective was the Borealis gate; to blockade it and prevent or delay reinforcements from Kaus Borealis getting through.

The Stygia and our four escorts, the assault cruisers CSS Defiance and CSS Opposition, the border cruiser CSS Rebellion, and the strike cruiser CSS Retribution had jumped in a couple of thousand GUs sunwards of Pyron. It wasn't long before we encountered a mid-sized UGTO group consisting of an EAD, a battle dread, and a few cruisers and destroyers. The battle began almost immediately when the enemy ships jumped us. Once we had engaged them, Battlegroup One jumped in directly behind the UGTO force and caught them by surprise. It wasn't much time before the battle dread was destroyed and their rest of their fleet sent into disarray. The EAD was isolated and put on the defensive. She put up a hard fight though, taking out a couple of cruisers from Battlegroup One.



A few minutes ago, the Old Man had decided that they were going to capture the wounded EAD. Guess who would be doing the dirty work?


"One minute!", Tactical's voice crackled through the pod's comms, breaking my train of thoughts.

The LT barked, "OK gentlemen, breach ASAP and spread out pronto. Point procedures, Fireteam Alpha secure the entry. Bravo and Charlie to follow and secure the perimeter. Small arms fire only while we're still near the pressure hull. Explosives and heavies are free once we've moved deeper into the ship. Primary is the bridge. Failing that, we head aft for the reactor and blow it. So unless we cap the bridge, gentlemen, this is gonna be a one way trip."

Hell, this WAS a one way trip! The assault pod was basically a modified transport pod, with added armor and an armor piercing "penetrator" nose designed to punch through the hull of a ship. It was a single use vehicle in a sense that once you got to your destination, you had to be extracted by other means. In a planetary insertion, the pod could be recovered for reuse later. In a ship to ship breach/insertion, like the one we were about to embark on, you'd have to yank it out of the target's hull with a giant forcep! Well, maybe not. But whatever it was, this was going to be one hell of a ride with a big jolt at the end of it.

The LT patched the pod's comms into the ship's tacnet and picked up the bridge/battlegroup chatter.

"Helm, come 15 degrees port, dive 20. Bring us as close as you can over the EAD."
"15 degrees port, Dive 20. Aye, Sir!"
"Stygia, Defiance. We're drawing fire for your insertion, over".
"Defiance, Stygia. Roger that. 30 seconds to insertion. Maneuvering to pass over target. Maintain fire on her port side, over."
"Stygia, Defiance. Roger Wilco. Out"

The ship rumbled and shook, probably receiving heavy fire from the UGTO EAD.

"Stygia, Rebellion. We're taking heavy damage from that EAD. Disengaging, over!"
"Rebellion, Opposition. Copy that. Break off. We'll cover your egress, out."

"Bridge to assault teams, 15 seconds. Prepare for insertion. Pod 1, target forward, bridge. Pod 2, target aft, engines, over"
"Roger, out", responded the LT. "Lock and load, gentlemen. This is it."
"Roger, out", replied the commander in Pod 2.

The comms chatter continued; "Stygia, commencing insertion. Out."

I snapped my visor down, hearing my heart pounding in my ears. Then a sudden acceleration slammed me into the seat and I felt the G's rising for a few seconds before the retros kicked in and threw me forward into my harness. This was followed almost immediately by a jarring impact accompanied by a loud metallic crunching noise. That was the pod slamming into and through the target ship's hull.

"Breach! Go, go, go!". I hit the quick release latch on my harness, and sprang up weapons at the ready. Spec Thompson was already on his feet near the bow of the pod, pulling the breaching handle. We heard a loud booming noise as the explosive charges located outside the nose hatch blew. The hatch was blown out next, and Spec Wohlsen threw a couple of concussion grenades through.

"Fire in the hole!"

The nades went off with a loud whump, and the first two marines leapt through the hatch with weapons at the ready. "ALL CLEAR! MOVE! Go, go, go!" My turn. I flicked the safety on my rifle off and leapt through the hatch into the smoky compartment. Fireteam Bravo cleared the hatch on the left, while Charlie covered the right.

I comm'ed, "Alpha, all clear. Out.", then surveyed the scene. It looked like we breached into some kind of cargo or utility hold. It was pretty large, about a hundred feet in length and breadth with a ceiling of maybe about 40 feet or so. There were a couple of broken bodies of what looked to be UGTO techs, from their uniforms, lying not far from the pod among the wreckage and debris of broken crates and containers. They were probably blown away by the pod's breaching charge when Thompson pulled it. All around us, the EAD was still shaking and rumbling from the hits it was taking from the rest out our battlegroup. I hoped to hell they didn't forget that we were on the EAD and try too hard to kill it.

The LT looked around, scanning the walls of the compartment and found what he was looking for. "D16F15... We're in one of the starboard holds, somewhere a quarter of the way forward", he announced. He called out a map, and uplinked it to our HMDs. The map appeared in my visor.

ICC agents had managed to secure the deck plans of several UGTO ships. And right now, it was paying off well for us. UGTO ships indicated their compartments by decks and frames. D16F15; we were on Deck 16, Frame 15. We were midway between the bow and amidships of the dreadnought. Our objective, the bridge, was located less than a thousand feet from where we were and a few decks up. But that was in a straight line. We still had to navigate our way through the labyrinthine confines of this huge enemy ship. And we could .... no, we would.... run into company along the way. It wasn't going to be a cakewalk.

At the same time, I was wondering about Platoon 2. They were in the second pod that was launched with us. Their objective was to work their way towards the aux gens and engine room aft, disabling the jump drive and basically make a whole lot of noise to draw attention while we tried to ninja our way to the bridge.

The LT discussed the route to the bridge with Spec Stanton, suggesting that we get there through the use of the transport tubes located not far from our current position. Dreadnoughts were huge ships. A UGTO EAD was about 5000 feet long. Moving from end to end on a ship this large would take a long time. That was why most dreadnoughts and cruisers came with transport tubes that ran through most of its internal length. The tubes were like mini subway cars, stopping at various stations along its way. Analyzing the deck plans, we observed that we had to move about 2 frames forward and 1 deck up to get to the nearest tube station. Following that, we had to take the car about 2 stations forward. That would put us about 1 frame aft and just 1 deck under the bridge. It was a hell of a lot better than fighting our way through compartment after compartment on foot. Now all we needed was the element of stealth on our side. The closer we got to the bridge undetected, the better.

Just then, the ship's 1MC came alive. "Boarding Craft detected, Deck 12, Frame 90. Repeat, boarding craft detected, Deck 12, Frame 90. Enemy boarding parties onboard! All available combat teams, respond!" The message repeated again amidst the klaxons going off. The ship shook again, taking more hits in the battle still ongoing out in space.

"Looks like Platoon 2's got their attention.", the LT announced. "Get moving. Won't be long before they figure out we're here too."

We made our way to the compartment hatch, my Fireteam Alpha in the lead. Our job was to breach our way to the next compartment. Bravo would storm in after us while Charlie covered the rear. Approaching the hatch, Stanton took up the left side of the hatchway while the LT took the right, ready to activate the hatch panel. I raised my rifle and sighted it down at the hatch in a rifleman's stance, semi-crouched with my finger on the trigger. At my signal, the LT hit the hatch panel and the door slid apart revealing a passageway going left and right. Quickly stepping through, I cleared the passageway left while Thompson cleared the right. The HMD indicated that we should proceed left towards the tube station. The rest of Alpha came through into the passageway sticking close to the sides, followed by Bravo. Charlie came in last and covered the rear as we advanced to the next waypoint as indicated.

Time: 1 minute since breach.

Moving briskly down the passageway, Thompson spotted a security cam somewhere along the passageway and shot it out just as a door beneath it slid open and a couple of UGTO crewmembers stepped through. I took aim at the first crewmember and squeezed the trigger, putting a trio of shots into his torso and dropping him. The second crewmember had less than a second to let out a surprised cry before Thompson cut him down with a burst. The sound of gunfire was deafening in the narrow passageway. We rushed forward towards the open doorway, hearing shouting coming from the compartment within. As I bounded towards the hatch I grabbed a frag nade from my right pocket and ripped it off my webbing, leaving the safety pin hanging off of it. Popping the lever off, I lobbed the nade through the door as it began to close. The nade sailed right through as I called "Fire in the hole" and backed up against the wall.

There was a loud thud and metallic pinging as the door closed. Taking position on right of the door, the LT hit the hatch panel as I stormed through into the compartment, rifle at the ready. There was a wounded crewmember still upright and slouched against a wall. Thompson followed in and cut him down with a burst to the chest.

I took a quick look around and spotted a couple of broken bodies lying amongst the strewn furniture. It looked like a Quartermaster office, or what was left of it. The LT stepped in and fired two rounds from his silenced handgun into the comms panel on the wall while Bravo and Charlie maintained vigil in the passageway.

We had to move fast now. That nade going off would definitely have been heard through the compartment walls. Despite the constant rumbling and shaking from the battle out in space, a nade going off within the ship would sound and feel very distinctive. We left the office as it was, closing the door behind us and proceeded quickly towards the tube station. As we briskly made our way forward, the ship's 1MC announced "Deck 16, Frame 13. Enemy boarding parties onboard! Available combat teams to respond", repeating it amidst renewed klaxons.

Frak me! They were on to us now. We had to get to that tube station ASAP.

After making our way about down the passageway about another 50 feet, we came to a stairwell. We had to proceed one deck up to get to the tube station. With Thompson covering the stairway down and Wohlsen covering the stairs up, I cautiously inched my way up the steps. We could hear the clanging of footsteps on the deck somewhere around us now. No doubt the crew was already taking up arms, or perhaps the marine detachment they had onboard was already enroute to engage us.

Sticking my head through to the next deck, I saw no one along the passageway. I climbed through and crouched next to the stairwell covering the passageway forwards. Thompson quickly followed through and covered the aftward passage. Next came the LT, Wohlsen and Stanton with their weapons pointed up the stairwell at the next deck above. As Alpha spread out to secure the passageway, I called "All Clear" and Bravo came through the stairwell and covered the stairs to the next deck up. Charlie remained below decks for the time being.

Time: 3 minutes since breach.

Down the passageway, just over a ramp that led to a larger than normal doorway, there was a sign on the ceiling that indicated "Tube Station F13". I checked it out against my HMD map display, then looked at the LT and pointed towards the doorway giving him a thumbs up. The LT nodded and motioned Wohlsen and Stanton towards it. Bravo covered the passageway aft while Charlie came up the stairwell. Crouching right in front of the door, I flicked the selector on my rifle to full auto and pulled a concussion grenade from my webbing. The LT was right beside me with a flashbang in hand. Wohlsen and Stanton were on both sides of the doorway ready to hit the switch. Our visors polarized as we called anti-flash mode.

At the LT's command, Wohlsen hit the door open panel and I lobbed the concussion grenade through. It went off with a jarring thud and the LT tossed the flashbang through. We rushed in right after it. The flashbang went off in another loud fireworks show. Eyes protected in anti-flash mode, we entered the compartment to see several crewmembers either lying on the ground or staggering about in a daze. The staccato of gunfire was short and controlled as we took out anyone still on his feet.

Without delay the LT headed straight for what seemed like the tube control console. Stanton was beside him in an instant and they began working on the controls, calling for a tube car. Bravo followed in, while Charlie set up a claymore mine with laser tripwires at the stairwell.

Time: 4 minutes since breach.

A tube car was arriving just as Charlie entered the Tube station and began welding the door shut with their torches. The car was a six meter long capsule-like vehicle that resembled one of those monorail carriages that ferry passengers between terminals at the starport and looked good for about 15 or so occupants, enough for all of us. It was time to hustle, as we heard and felt the claymore in the stairwell going off. Getting into the car, I saw Spec Gutierrez of Charlie just finishing up on the door weld, getting up on his feet and turning towards us, when several shots from the other side dented the door in several places. The Charlie guys started running for the car when the door suddenly blew in. One of the flying halves of the door panels caught Gutierrez in the back, sending him hurtling towards the wall where he laid motionless. The rest of Charlie took cover behind whatever they could and began firing back at the doorway. Through the comms we could hear Hawkins from Charlie screaming at us to get the hell out of there.

The LT hesitated just a little before operating the car control panel. The car door closed in and we began moving off, leaving the sounds of battle behind. Stanton let out a curse about leaving all of Charlie behind, but we knew there was little that could have been done. We had to focus on the mission at hand: Cap the bridge, and hope that Charlie could hold them off, or at the very least be taken prisoner.

Time: 6 minutes since breach.

It was a short 30 seconds ride to Station F5. We were already positioned around the car door, ready to get off ASAP. If there was a squad on the other side waiting for us, we couldn't afford to be pinned down inside the car. A single nade or rocket would take us all out. As the car pulled to a stop and the door opened, Stanton tossed a flashbang through and rushed out, followed by the rest of us. The flashbang reverberated in the cavernous tube station as I dove through and landed on my belly, still in anti-flash mode. Panning around, I saw a few UGTO crewmembers staggering about and shot them.

At that moment, the station's main doorway opened and a couple of objects came flying through. The first exploded in a flash, its intensity filtered out by my polarized visor. The second began releasing a thick cloud of smoke. "Smoke! Get to cover! Switch to IR! Switch to IR!", I heard the LT shouting over the comms. I scrambled on all fours behind one of the control consoles and called up IR mode. Then while proned, I peered around the console at the station's doorway and took aim. The world appeared in monochrome as I thumbed the rifle's IR laser pointer on. The moment the first white silhouette came through the door, I put the laser pointer on him and squeezed the trigger. The figure jerked about spasmodically and dropped to the ground. The two other silhouettes who followed behind him were also unceremoniously cut down by rest of the squad.

We heard shouting coming from outside of the door. Then a couple of objects came sailing into the room. Oh frak! "GRENADE!!"

I retreated back behind the console and got into a fetal position, covering my head. The dual explosions jarred me through the skull. Quickly recovering and peering back around the console, I saw more white silhouettes rushing through the doorway into the station. "Open fire!", I could hear the LT through the comms. I fired at them, dropping another one of them as I began to gag from the smoke. The gunfire was deafening amidst the screams and shouts. Not seeing anymore targets in my line of sight, I continued firing intermittently at the doorway hoping to prevent more of the enemy from storming through.

Then I heard Mendelssohn from Bravo shouting through the comms for everyone to take cover. Not a second later, a rocket streaked through the doorway and exploded in the passageway beyond. I grabbed a frag nade off my webbing and rolled it through the doorway, hearing it go off a moment later. What followed was complete silence. Still proned and panting hard, I leopard crawled towards the door, switching my visor back to anti-flash mode. Reaching the doorway, I comm'ed the squad my position and called them to hold fire. Slowly putting my head around the doorway, all I saw were several shattered bodies in a blackened and burnt out passageway, and a gaping hole in the wall that revealed a burnt out stateroom within. Slowly getting to my feet, I signalled the all clear. Wohlsen and another spec from Bravo didn't make it. Stanton found Wohlsen slouched in a corner, a bullet hole in his bloodied visor. The Bravo spec was lying face down in a pool of his own blood and viscera, having taken the full brunt of a frag nade.

No time to waste, we had to get one deck up and forwards to the bridge.

Time: 8 minutes since breach.

We made our way out of the station compartment and down the passageway forwards as indicated by the HMD. After about 40 feet, we came to a stairwell going up. Taking point, I slowly climbed the stairwell and peered through at the next deck up. Just as I stuck my head up through to the next deck and looked down the passageway, I saw an armed figure running through a large doorway at the end which then closed behind him. A telltale glow between the split door panels suggested that they were welding the door from the inside, sealing it. The HMD indicated the compartment through the doorway as the bridge. I signalled the all clear and came up through to the deck followed by the rest of Alpha. Thompson began priming a breaching charge as we moved cautiously towards the doorway. The 1MC was blaring "Available combat teams, respond to the bridge!" repeatedly.

Thompson set the timer for 10 seconds as we took cover along the passageway. "Small arms fire only. Flashbangs, no nades. Watch the viewports.", whispered Stanton through the comms. Bravo was covering the stairwell and passageway aft. The LT, Stanton, Thompson and myself would be storming the bridge. I pulled out my flashbang and primed it.

The breaching charge went off, shaking the whole passageway with a loud bang. I rounded the corner and tossed the flashbang through then got into a crouch position facing the doorway. As it went off, Thompson rushed through into the bridge, followed by me. Thompson cleared the right, taking aim and firing controlled bursts at anyone still standing. I entered and panned to the left, seeing a crewmember staggering about reaching for his sidearm. I fired a burst at his upper torso, the recoil causing the rifle's barrel to rise. His head exploded in a shower of blood and brain matter. I heard the LT screaming for the crew to surrender as he stormed in after Thompson.

Out of the corner of my eye I saw another figure rise up from behind one of the bridge consoles with a rifle in hand. I spun left to take aim but he beat me to the draw. I saw a muzzle flash as I levelled my weapon at him. Then a hammerblow somewhere near the left of my hip spun me around. It felt as if someone had stuck a hot needle into my waist. Time seemed to slow down. As I was going down, I saw the UGTO marine being shredded in a hail of gunfire.

Then I was down on the ground, staring up at the ceiling. The remaining bridge crew were raising their hands as I looked around. Stanton was suddenly in my face, shouting something I couldn't quite make out as I began to black out. The next thing I saw was Bravo's medic looking down at my midsection, bloodied field dressing in hand. The LT was saying something to me as he pulled out a morphine syrette and jabbed it into my thigh. Then everything went black again. I struggled to open my eyes and found myself being lifted on some stretcher through a passageway, before it went black yet again.

I dreamt of home. Of Exathra; lying in my armchair on the balcony of my apartment gazing at the night sky. Looking at a crescent Minuete, and the bright point of light in the sky that was the Shi Jie Shipyard facilities. She was there sitting in the chair next to me, holding on to my hand. I could see her worried smile. Tomorrow's my enlistment day. I was headed to boot camp to heed the call of the Confederacy. To earn my place as a Citizen. But wait a minute.... this was all years ago. Then Minuete seemed to be glowing brighter and brighter till it lit up the night sky like a sun.

I came to about a week later onboard a hospital ship heading back to Exathra. The doctor told me that I was lucky. The round entered my body just under the left ribs and nicked my kidney before passing through without tumbling. It could've been a nasty exit wound otherwise, probably unsavable. I was probably going to be out of action for a few months, but at least I was going to live. Fireteam Charlie managed to hold off the enemy squad at the Tube Station until the call from the bridge came for the UGTO Marines to surrender and lay down their arms.

Through the grapevine I heard that the EAD UWS Bellerophon, now under ICC control, was enroute to Shi Jie where it would be stripped down and studied. Dres-Kona was back in ICC hands after a successful Operation Hades. Last we heard, the UGTO were being attacked heavily by the K'luth in Kaus Borealis. That would buy the ICC some time as we reinforced Dres-Kona.

Eventually, I was returned to service but reassigned as an intel spec at the Marine HQ at Camp Altis on Peron, Dres-Kona for the remainder of my tour of duty.

Nice detail. Just out of curiosity, how long did it take to get everything together and type it out?

Not too long, actually. Took me about a couple of days to type it up. I already had a general idea of how I wanted the story to go.

I based the ICC troopers on the Colonial Marines from Aliens (1986) with the helmet idea from most Sci-Fi shooters like Halo. Then I thought about how to move about inside massive ships like DS dreads and decided that they had to have some kinda internal subway system to make travelling from point to point more feasible.

Finally I took a look at the Dres-Kona and CD+36 maps to decide on the locations I wanted the story to take place.


Basically I just wanna try another perspective of the DS Universe. Not just from a ship pilot's or captain's POV.

Actually, not really.

I'm not too big on survival horror games. Been playing Ops Flashpoint, Modern Warfare, Call of Duty more recently.

Hmm if these are the light infantry who are equipped with more futuristic versions of our weapons, I still wonder what the heavy infantry would have.

I would think that the Inf and Hvy Inf units would include armor, arty, and mechanized units. The game is just simplifying thing.
