Those of us who play Darkspace may forget that the scaling between ships, planets, and stars are WAY off from what is "realistic". Take a look at this animation based on actual scaling between Earth, Sol, Rigel, and VY Canis Majoris.

I don't think the game engine can handle a star like Canis Majoris

If stars were properly scaled the MV would need to be several thousand times larger due to stars being larger, and planet/moon orbits needing to be scaled up as well.

Scale down and planets would be tiny to the point of being smaller than railgun rounds, to say nothing of ships.

I think he means scale down the ships. Or maybe I'm just being a brain-dead forum poster again.

Not so much a question of actual size than poly counts and textures.

Scaling planets up would require a little bit of an increase in poly counts perhaps, seeing as how
spheres wouldn't need that much. But the textures would require some work especially up close. Stars would be easier to "fix" since u can't fly that close anyway.

Scaling ships down would mean less polies and less details on yr ships.

ive often thought about this. Planets real size and off plane so they do not block your paths. Stations in orbit you fight over instead...

but.. it was just a dream! I dont think DS has that kind of backing.

Just in case it wasn't clear... I was certainly not advocating that DS go towards proper "realistic" scaling. That would just be silly.

So your saying you want things a tad more realistic, so you dont get stations that are twice the size of planets?

okay if it where realistic the system req would go up like MAD. i mean really. starsystems would be HUGE. not just thinking about every one else who play's so more or less they scale it it would be best to just "Shrink the ship's" i mean a station is almost as big as most moon's in this game. i do agree that it is off scale but think of it.
