The next time around if you have a password that long...or any for that matter. Maybe have it on a scrap of paper thats put in a safe place? A hard copy of the pass that cannot be lost when the hd goes...except if your idea of "somewhere safe" means you can't remember where it is when you need it. Other than that the only definite way to lose the hard copy would be if the house burned down. (Other ways exist...so just dont put a "Yahoo Password" label on it.)

I've got one such copy for mine which I keep close at hand.

this reminds me of something that happened to me last year ( i think it was last year). this computer got a virus and couldnt fix it for at least 3 months. so i couldnt play darkspace during that time. and yes this was during the time when i could play without worrying about lag ( unless there was a big battle). i just thought i would share this.

Thanks for the replies everyone, and your right talien, if you take apart a hard drive and so much as a single speck of dust lands on it, its ruined.

Im pretty sure its a arm failure, il try freezeing it later on. The only thing of any real value on it is the email password, and since my email is Yahoo theres no other way to recover my account.

Thanks for the tips, and as usual il probably play Darkspace for a month or so again untill I get bored and leave, untill my new harddrive fails(and I know it will) and I go through the whole process again.

remember:

!! put the disk in a waterproof bag (eg the anti-static bag from the new one) and seal it with tape !!
if any liquid get to the drive, it might be damaged beyond repair

Well, I have to applaud your retardedness.

First you make a horribly long password for an important account, don't back it up or just write it down, and then you give a fake alternate email and random answers to recovery questions.

Good job sir, good job.

Can we please lock his account and send him a mail with instructions to unlock it?

Seriously, after the first time I lost a hard drive, I made precautions that something like that wouldnt happen again. (When I lost the next one (only 2 in my life so far...), I thought I had everything secure, but I never backed up a program I wrote myself :/)

Just because I don't want anyone to actually use this advice, I'm going to explain why this is a bad idea.

1. If an SSD fails, you are dead. As have been discussed in this thread there are tricks that might get your data back from a regular drive. An SSD is basically RAM that isn't volatile, so you cannot hack any of the data off without some professional help.

2. SSDs are still pretty new. There have been A LOT of problems with firmware and controller chips and such for these. There was a case of one where when you restarted your machine it just nuked all of your data.

3. SSDs have a much shorter lifespan than a regular HDD. By this I mean there is a certain number of writes that an SSD can handle. After that is is guaranteed to fail. While it is true that a commercial user like our young OP here will probably never reach that threshold, it is still a possibility.

Moral of the story: SSDs are incredibly fast will probably serve a commercial user well. They are in no way more reliable than an old fashioned HDD.

Edit: bbcode is HARD

meh. i can remember all of my passwords.

Also, in that picture someonep ut with the long worded password, swap the first? letter for a symbol or chracter, otherwise your EXTREMELY vulnerable to dictionairy hacks.

I don't think there are any dictionaries out there that contain the exact phrase "correct horse battery staple".

Dictionary attacks work because people tend to use single words in passwords (and yes, these dictionaries will contain modifications like p4ssw0rd). If you use an entire phrase, a single-word dictionary attack becomes impossible.
Sure, you can guess "correct", "horse", "battery" and "staple", but each word seperately isn't the password and you don't get feedback on your guess (guessing "correct horse battery toaster" will not get you a response of "You got the first three words right!"). You'd have to know exactly how many words are in the password (four in this example) and then run through every single combination of four words in your dictionary, which is an insane number of combinations.
