Mac OS can't do 4-way SLI or Crossfire. Waste of GPU power. Not to mention those Xeon's wouldn't be enough to keep all of those GPU's fed, even if you used Windows. I know of only a handful of motherboards that can keep up with the IO demands along a full 4-way 16x PCI-e lane, let alone processors which can keep up with the demand.

Current
Pentium IV 2.0ghz Over Cloak
640 ram
Ninvida 64 bit card.
80 Giga Byte Hard Drive

Want 1,000$
AMD 8 Core processor
12Giga's Ram
324 bit
4.5 Terra Bite internal Drives

what i think
why pay more than 1000$ for a computer when you cna build a amazing system with just a little over working and you got a nice thing going and by the way those I7's are over rated. and far to expensive some 500$ just for the processor when with that 500$ i could get a 8 core! come on people
cept for that 324 bit i could do iwht a 128. but hey der's mah dream PC

i7's are amazing. Especially when you multitask a lot. Which I do. Real useful. Well worth it, too. It's going to be a while before they're out dated, it seems.

And yeah, you're right. I got a computer for 500 AUD a year or two ago, couldn't run a lot, really bad, when I could've gotten something double the power, for just about $500. And assembling your computer isn't hard at all, took me a few hours for mine, since it was the very first time I had assembled a computer. Definitely worth the money, though.

Built a new one late November:

i7 2700k

Asus P6Z68 Deluxe/Gen3 motherboard

Samsung F3 1TB HDD (it was cheap considering the highly inflated prices. When they finally drop again I'll upgrade, but for now this is fine)

Corsair HX 750 Professional 750 watt PSU

Cooler Master HAF X full tower

G.Skill Ripjaws X 8gb (2x4gb) DDR3 1600

Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO heatsink

EVGA GTX 570 HD Video Card - 2560MB

Asus 24x DVD burner

Windows 7 Home Premium

I waited and waited and waited for the AMD bulldozers, and when they were finally released they were failures. They're not bad CPUs, they're just not good enough. This rig runs Battlefield 3 and Skyrim on max ultra settings no problem, and I even add ambient occlusion to Skyrim via Nvidia beta drivers. It's also future proof enough that I don't have to worry for a while. It's easy to overclock and runs cool. It's a Cadillac while my last computer was an old Ford Taurus.
