ICC and UGTO ships currently have bump mapping in beta, and I'd appreciate feedback regarding the look of it. I'm no texture artist, so don't expect perfection, but there should be subtle (but noticable) 'bumpiness' to ships that previously had a flat surface.

You'll need shaders enabled to see them.

:S

I'll see if my laptop can handle it, to beta!

Ill check out icc.

If i track what textures are distorted on what ship, will it be used?

(you know some of the textures are really distorted)

Has to do with stretching, and uv mapping errors. Sometimes, it looks like textures are applied along the wrong axis. Some ships look like they were UV mapped, and textured only to have their geometry changed later without updating the map.

Remove the Bump map from the light map textures, the logo's are all borked now.

How did you do the bump maps for the textures?

Scout-ok

Frigate-ok

Old Destroyer-ok

New Destroyer- bad. Multiple distorted textures along the bottom, aft section, including the lower and upper vertical wing. Distortions on the Fore wedge section of the ship just behind the nose peace. Lower wedge shaped weapons hard point on horizontal nasals heavily distorted. Engineering and command tower section look good.

Standard Cruiser- OK – Forward horizontal nasals have slight distortions in texture. Section of the hull that connects to main engines on both sides have heavy distortion. Lower middle engine heavily distorted along the sides of the cylinder. Overall, Looks awesome.

Missile Cruiser- Flawless! Amazing!

Guppy-Good – Distortions on panels above outer engines on left and right side.

Carrier Cruiser- Good Nearly flawless, needs the bump map removed from the runways. (they look like their 100 years old)

Old Dreadnaught- Looks Amazing! As a side effect, or intended, they look very old now. (as they should) Very nice looking.

Uh, looks like you might have shaders disabled Defiance.

And on another note, I haven't moved or changed ANY of the textures. The only thing I've added is a bump mask to said textures.

The ICC ships don't have many contours, so don't look as bumpy.

Shaders are enabled (went and checked to be sure), My screenshots put a haze over the pics for some reason.

You reallly see the bump map pop when you rotate your camera.

Yes, i realize you did not move the textures, they have been this way for some time. With the bump mapping, its painfuly obvious where they are off.

Overall, im pleased with it. Visually its a step up in most cases. Where textures have been applied correctly, it looks amazing!

Unfortunately there's not much I can do to 're-align' the textures. This is where having a texture artist and modeler would be handy. ICC seem a lot more subtle in comparison to UGTO, which I think is fitting.

Some screenshots for people who can't see:

Going to go through and re-do all the ICC textures with increased depth scale, should get on it tonight but not 100% if I'll finish it (it's a lengthy process).

Question is: Do you guys actually UV map your ships? Or just slap tiles on them and stretch/rotate them across certain areas?

@ Kenny: It depends on who did the original model/mapping. Some are correctly UV mapped, and others are not (as you can tell).

All new models need to be correctly mapped, which is why so few have actually been added.
