Then how about fleet insignia's? It could be as simple as "painting" the fleet tag on the side of a ship. No balancing issues, and no noticeable lag that I can foresee.

hm if command-dreads (and/or stations) get their group-buff device, it could be swappable with a fleet-version

the fleet-version would have stronger bonuses, but only for fleetmembers

Personally, I think it's not a bad idea, it would give a bit of diversity to the ships... Specialized layouts designed at fleet creation perhaps for a single ship, like an RSM station or a PB dreadnought. It would require a few hundered lines of code, and a new DB table, though.

Not to mention each design would need to be looked at and approved by the staff before it could be used, and most likely not getting accepted because people will want to create "uber" ships that can fill any combat role.
