It makes sense, with some kind of actual command function they wouldn't need to be able to do everything else too. Now I'm really curious to the layout of the new command ships. Maybe the Jump Cruiser could be tossed in favor of a Command Cruiser, or convert the Toad into one since right now it's just a copy of the Guppy with a different model?

Glad you hear they will have some kind of command ability, whatever that may be.

The Command Carrier is already special, not?

It is selfsufficent with a mining beam and builddrone.
It stays behind the frontline suporting with fighters, fixing planets and building platforms.
Or it may be a (not very mobile^^) stealth scout/carrier with ECMs on and shields off.

HQs are always behind the frontline and dont have much or any firepower themselves, i think that fits and command ships are not useles.

Bla bla bla.... command ships are command ships even without a "special command ability".

Commanders generally aren't engineers.

But their not 'headquarters'...They are literally by description the flagship. Whatever mission is being undertaken, they should be able to participate. With the low amount of players/comand structure, that also means they need to be able to fill in whatever gaps there are in the fleet. Example if there is a bomber and escort, it should be able to resuply them. Giving it low level capabilities across the board will only help since its still weak in every area especially combat. If you make a truely capable command ship, and add the buffing ability to it, other pilots will come and support it, ensuring the fleet based nature of the game. As it is people barely even support stations.

Isn't mobility key to scouting though? Any ship can check what's on the other side of a jump gate, but only small ships have the mobility to search entire systems in a timely manner. Mobility also helps escape the trouble that scouts invariably find themselves in at some point.

Unless exceptionally longrange sensors or vastly-improved recon fighters are added to the command ship, I fail to see its potential as a scout.
