From AvP.....

Adele Rousseau: Same principle as a condom. I'd rather have one and not need it, then need it and not have one.

A) Some tests have shown Norton actually opening security holes in peoples systems. It's also notoriously easy to hack (see B).

B) Many viruses, as their first priority, infect your anti-virus software and make it produce false negatives. Re-installing on a regular basis is a good idea, unless you lock down your computer

C) My lock-down:

Mozilla firefox with no-script and McAfee site advisor; immediately close browser if on a red site, remove cookies after every use
Comodo firewall and anti-virus with a daily scan routine
Ad-aware, daily scan
Spybot Search and Destroy (WARNING: SS&D will make some games unplayable just by being installed, and also sometimes gets false positives. Suggested only if you have a serious issue)

Nothing gets in without me knowing about it. It is usually promptly destroyed thereafter if it does.

well said lark. however, Spybot Search and Destroy and Malwarebytes should be standard tools in removing threats from a Windows computer. Regardless of the risks. SS&D *may* break some things, but it will not inherently break good programs.... that's just a liability notice unless you have experience with that.

In my experience it only breaks malware infected games, if any. And even then, it does more good than bad. No hate on SS&D please... I've donated to SS&D... it's a good utility: it even makes a Registry backup before it lets you start it if you let it to do so without skipping.

To everyone: Always have backups or archived disk-images.

Makes me laugh every time I see that sig Lark. Hope all is well.

...WHAT DO THEY HOPE TO GAIN? (hehe)

Sometimes I rather work with HijackThis!, RegCleaner, MBAM and Msconfig.
Manual removal of registry entries, deletion of suspect files and services. Use your intuition to see
if something extra is in your Startup folder or Services.

Check each of your drive for hidden files and autorun.inf that calls these weird files.
FFS check your portable HDD and USB flash drives for these things too. Especially if they recur despite you cleaning it up time after time.

Some tools are just bloated, much like Norton is. Full of crap that slows down your PC or make things overly complicated. Simple lightweight tools are better.
