Well, ya figure if you included a z-axis, it would cause a lot of changes.
The reason I enjoy this game, is because of it's unique plane-esque style.
Rather than flying around in an other (not to be named) game, it took away from the rest of the gameplay. you'd be so into flying around, it became difficult to really truely manuever.
I dunno, it just seems wrong for DS to evolve to the z-axis stage.
nuff said.

Fact : The 1.5 series of DS revisions have clients with a flag code similar to SHIP_Z_AXIS_ENABLE=0 (equivalent to "No ship goes up or down by the client's commands").
It may have been done to make ship arcs more sensible. With z-flight and rotation, you can make 1-degree movements to switch arcs if your bottom is facing a target (thereby enabling an all-weapon alpha strike).
Or maybe calculation trajectories in 3 dimensions gets hard for the server (ask people of the DS 1.2 times about how fighterspamming UGTO broke the server. Most reply that its sheer number of collision detections, but i blame it on 3-D projectile motion of fighters and their cannons.
Or maybe universe is a huge empty place, and no-one wants to fly in an empty area. Yup, very lonely.
I don't think 3-D flight gets enabled anytime soon. Maybe after Two Weeks™...

| Think about one thing before you assume DS1 will move to 3D... Fighters. Fighters are already using 3D and that is why this code is in-place, just FYI.

Humans have never fought in 3d space (Even modern day fighter craft are limited: Gravity is always in the same direction) . A person needs experience with this type of gameplay (e.g. have played a space sim before) in order to use it effectively.
Basically, a simplified core system makes a game accessible, from which more in-depth gameplay elements can be added. Darkspace has more than enough in-depth gameplay elements to keep anyone satisfied .

It could hypothetically work if you used a Homeworld-style interface without changing the essential character (tactical vs. shooter) of the game...
I'm not sure why you would, though. And from a programming perspective, you really would need a new engine from the ground-up to make it work.

Yeah. Homeworld is a good example. The game doesn't have true 3D freedom. It's more of a 2D plane on multiple levels with a floor n ceiling.
If DS has this then collisions can be made possible.

I know that brother , and I also wrote "No ship goes up or down by the client's commands" to indicate that. Yet, thank you for clearing out any doubt the newbies out there have
And as a little bit of information for the newbies out there, all devices in DS (even mines) support 3-D positioning and movement. Examples are Line Stations shooting lasers and core weapons on a misfortunate AI which is sitting on top of the it, mines getting shoved upwards by allied ships which pass over it, PSMs and bombs chasing a random Cortex Nexus on Earth (yes, this happened), and finally EWAS and SRR fighters slowly increasing your signature as they dive towards you with their ECCMs.
Yup, DS supports all that under 100 mB of files. Awesome >:O

Build it upon the Freespace engine or something. LOL.

We're not supposed to talk about DS2, but I can give you a teaser for the box cover design:
