Every once in a while, someone yells about how from FA and up, we unlock fewer ships, and MA and CM in particular doing absolutely nothing.

So! Once again, someone is yelling about new ships. I propose a spin.

Simply enough, high ranked ships at lower classes. The twist? These are otherwise known as experimental ships.

These are ships that are each factions continuing advancement in warfare by trying unorthodox ship layouts to see their benefit. Or detriment.

For each faction, upon reaching the rank of FA, you will begin unlocking these ships. They may require special badges that are more difficult to aquire as well.

With this, each faction gets one experimental ship per class.

Scouts would be ranked at FA

Frigates at GA

Destroyers at M

and Cruisers at CM

There could be a possibility of an experimental dreadnaught, as well at CM, requiring many difficult badges, but I recommend against it.

These ships would be equppied in strange and quirky ways and therefore are used in unlikely and strange ways.

As an example, an experimental scout might be equipped with more engines than usual and have a tighter turn rate, have alot of sensor/beacon slots, but no weapons.

Or a frigate on UGTO might have two jumpdrives rather than one, and be equipped with a QST or two.

You get the idea.

It would be down to the Dev's (or players imput) of creativity and making surei t doesn't upset balance too much (or make other ships redundant). But otherwise an acceptable reward for those ranks.

No, it would be more like the Pirate elites from Rogen's Rift. The home system elites are very much OP but the Pirates are pretty well balanced from what I understand, they just have odd setups like 3 engines on a Frigate instead of 2 but crappy weapon loadouts.

Not that strong.

They're pretty much just standard hulls with nore unorthodox weapon sets. They would likely not have any more weapons or armor than their counterparts, or if they did, it would be balanced in some way so as to have to less reactors or something.

Think along the lines of an ICC Destroyer that fires nothing but Proton Cruise Missiles.

how about new and improved projectile weaponry? ICC need a beef up for their weapons or at least a new gun for each faction

We don't need new weapons, just reducing the energy use for Gauss would be plenty.

Or something like a Corvette equipped with 1 Ion Cannon and no other weapon system? We'd never get that, but it would be fun as hell to fly around.

Talking about experimental ships, what ever happened to the brood/krill that had shields on it?

Pirates had a scout with the following load out:

1x fore ion cannon
1x aux gen
1x full shield
1x jump drive
1x engine

Was funny as hell, en masse they were extremely deadly.
