Im not sure if any one has suggested such an idea so im gonna say it. it would be great if there were platforms that could mine a planet and then either put the resources back on the planet or distribute it to the platforms around it. hopefully they would be able to mine rather quickly and would come in handy in the scenario server or when a new fleet or grand admiral is looking for a place to spawn that new station.

Great idea! Since each one would count against the total platform count, they should be worth it.

why distribute the ressources they've mined ? why not make em like starports so you can pull the ressources when you need em
oh, this way people have to look for their platforms so they dont run dry

All ideas of new platforms have been shot down and i think if my memorie serves this one was also shot down a few times.
i like this idea but i just hope thay dont shoot it down so quickly this time.

No really, gathering resources is a players job to maintain, if you want more mining than build mines, deep core mines, mantle extractors or additional factories to multiply it.
Platforms currently have a Repair, Offense and Scanning function.
We may add others at a later date but Mining, fighter or interdictor platform will not be added.

It would be good to AI-tomate some of the tasks like mining or res transfer.
Mining plats can be built and have some
kind of ai transport ships ferrying res back to the planets w starports.
Or, there can be special planetary commands where players can request res from starport planets, and these spawn ai transports who then ferry the stuff over.
So, yr enemy can intercept these convoys while combat ships protect them.

bombing platforms
barracks platforms
population platforms
food platforms
blocking platforms (can hide your ship behind them. large platforms to stop incoming fire)
shield platforms (alternate way to defend a planet)
point defense platforms
missile platforms
minelayer platforms (rotate, shoot out slow moving mines that automatically detonate at a given range)
beacon platforms
waypoint platforms (can rename them to label regions of space, objectives, depot planets, etc)
weapons depot platforms (can modify ship at them)
ECM platforms
scanner platforms
Gaifen lure
Decoy platforms (look like ships to enemy)
Temporary jumpgate platforms

Would it be possible to code orders that you could give to planets to go with the existing star port trading system but make it so that the res would be shipped one way to a planet of your choosing.

Guys even Faustus a while ago made the suggestion that mining platforms could be a possibility. I don't remember the thread but I think the discussion was about starports and AI transports being broken (edit: nope the discussion was about mining, duh!) . It was at least around that time.
I'll see if I can find it.

Could have tracking ability platforms. Like the Red-Laser idea that you suggested to add to ships for a way to combat K'luth. These Lasers could be applied to all platforms in a way... that it tracks it's target and you know which target it acquired. Should be able to help not running into their fire all the time.

A mining platform shouldn't be shot down so fast since its going to be implimented to help resource production on sy planets when the new marshal and Chief Marshal ships arrive they are gonna cosy alot i think and players need addiional storage for the resources, a mining platform could act as a resource storage for a planet and extra mining since mining planets are easly capped.

why just have it work on a planet? why not have it so it could be towed near a moon or a heavy concentration of asteroids and have it shuttle resources back to the nearest friendly AI or planet? Mining plats are usually in asteroid fields in Sci-Fi to begin with...

There was, once upon a time, a way to route from which planets to which planets the resouces would go to. I not sure what happened to that feature but I do believe it had something to do with players farming AI Transports.
