From what I understand, ships will basically have a threshold for when energy generation kicks in (which is above their base velocity).

This gives me an idea of how different drives interact with a ship when it comes to their energy.

I propose that different drives, like their attributes, affect a ships base velocity in a way that it effectively increases what speed a ship can be at before energy generation kicks in.

The idea is that different drives can add a ditinct energy gain in return for penalties.

Such as,

IE drive add none to base velocity, but also has no benefits or abilities.

PFE drive adds +25% to base velocity, reduces acceleration, reduces top speed, etc.

At first I was a bit "what?" at that last, seemingly-contradictory sentence, but it makes sense now. Basically, things like being able to move faster whilst generating maximum energy, but having a lower top speed and things like that.

Could be an interesting idea.

ok i think i understand what you are suggesting, but let me explain what we currently have.

Given for the example we have a ship, a frigate.
In the DS-DB chapter 3.1 Hull Classes, We can see that a frigates base velocity is 10gu/s.
Frigates have 2 engines and with Ion Engines equipped they have a top speed of 30gu/s.
A IE engines generates 0.52 Energy per second, so a frigate with two engines will generates a max of 1.04E/s

With the new system when a frigates flies between 0 and 10gu/s it will generate 1.04E/s. Should the frigate fly above 10gu/s its energy production will decrease to 0% when the frigates if flying at max speed.
Example; a frigate flying at 19.4gu/s will generate:
19.4-10= 9.4
1.04 / 20 = 0.052
9.4 * 0.052 = 0,4888
1.04 - 0,4888 = 0,5512E/s

All the engines have different characteristics.
Added top speed.
Trust generation (acceleration/deceleration)
Energy generation
Energy Storage

So with this explained, do you have any suggestion to the system?
Because if i grasped your idea correctly, this is what you wanted.
