idea is from freelancer but hey.

Gas clouds:

like a nebula but filled with random pockets of built up gas.
these will ignite due to weapons fire or high speed's as they would give off more heat/discharge the faster it goes (trail for ex)

this would be good for running too.
if you are in a station or dread. as smaller ships would be more likely to follow you, weapons fire may set off the pockets, would dramaticly slow opponents down.

i know this isnt as good as previously mentioned ideas but hell...

actualy i like this idea
a big cloud, that goes booooooom, when someone within shoots, vaporising everyone within
(C&C 3 comes to my mind right now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9u-MaNNDnU )

we could have nebulas that make you derelict as they suck up your power,
the problem is how do you get out, tractor doesnt work on players :/

/me points above

gravity field, slows ships by 0-90% (99%), depending on how close you get to the center

idea, how to make asteroid-fields (big ones, without increasing server load):

make an area, where every ship take damage (depending on ship-size/ asteroid-size -> see above)
spawn some asteroids (the current ones) within the field which can be mined
add a gray nebula-effect for the entire field ("dust-cloud")
change star-background ( the tiny dots you can always see) to asteroid-images

this way we can have huge asteroid-fields, but the server dont have to check for collisions for >100 (>1000 ) objects

Black Hole

* small visual core (around 100-200gu diameter)
* large hitbox (6k-10k gu?)
* very very large gravity area (up to 40-60k gu?)
* gravity area has a falloff of its gravity power
* disables all EW/Cloak/Beacons if you enter the gravity area
* disables the use of mines/missiles/sabots/fighters

* if you fly towards the core your ship will accerlerate and even exeed your maximum speed, f that happens your engines will slowly get damage

closer to the core will result in higher acceleration

* the black hole slowly sucks away ICC Shield power (on or off)

closer to the core will result in faster shield lose (up to the point where shield regeneration can't undo the damage, therfore the ship loosing shield power)

* if you fly away from the black hole, your speed and turnrate will decrease, if you are tooo close (based on your ships speedpower) you may hit 0.0 gu or even a negative gu value and therefor being slowly sucked into the core (until yout hit the hitbox and die)

* beam weapons loose 50% of their power (in order to even hit the enemy ship the beam weapons must use more power to focus their beams therfor reducing damage output)

Neutron Star

* very small - small star size
* bright white/blueish
* damages ICC shiled and k'luth organic armour (more damage the closer you get until the regeneration can't keep up)
* slowly kills infantry in your cargo holds (the closer you get the more damage they recive)

Pulsar

* small visual starlike object
* animated flashing pulse-like waves
* disables all EW/Cloak/Beacons/Shields
* reduces the Sensor-resolution/power by 50%

i know yet there need to be something so that people "see" tha they are effected by a black hole.

just a invisible area with strange effects is not enough .)
there needs to be something for the eye too

the black hole itself is invisible... you can only see the effect of it
