LOL. Taunting the enemy into distraction or making a mistake. I love it.
Why not? It's psychological warfare.

Not to mention their yells of "Come out and fight like a man!!" or... "Coward! Decloak and fight me!!"
LOL. Love it when their feathers get ruffled. It's griefing WITHIN the RoC.

If you are making the arguement in any way that /y is GOOD for the game, and not currently one of it's biggest phailings, than you are just a blind moron.
Oh, and btw. Sitting there and /y-ing at people to piss them off. Yeah, there's a term for that. It's in the RoC. You should read it. It's called grieving.
One more reason mods should be required to actually PLAY THE GAME.

There's also a term for this in the RoC. It's called being insulting to your fellow players. Kindly get your act together before you start complaining about other people.
Anyway, staff DO play the game, and should anybody feel that /y is getting out of hand, they can easily summon any staff that might be lurking in the lobby by invoking the /report command, with a quick summary of what's going on, who's playing up, and in which server. This goes for any situation where anyone feels unhappy about the behavior of other players.

Now, now, we can't say that. Some ppl could get pissed off if you so much as say "Hi" to them.
A bit of smacktalk is fine. Makes things more interesting.

In most (ie all) MMO games there is no cross faction chat. A number of reasons for this include:
People sitting in chat and slagging each other off.
Arguments, verbal duelling etc.
There's also the lore area to consider, that is, say for example in DS how the hell do humans understand luth?
It's always a bad idea to let different factions in a game talk to each other (in real time).
Besides, a person can only take so much of looking at bright red letters in all caps before getting a headache.

not true, however, if you consider the lore of DS... ICC and UGTO are human, thus same relitive language, and luth are quick learners...
however, this nifty thing called a Translation device... You should watch StarTrek some time. ^_^

Originally /y use to only go out to ships, friendly or not, that were within 5000gu of you, not the whole server or sector. When we moved to the large all inclusive multizone meta servers for the MV that limitation went away. Maybe we should look at re-limiting /y to 5000gu again.

Alright, first off: /y chat is dark red on black. It is extremely easy to mentally filter. Secondly; There was a time when the idea of no crossfaction chat seemed insulting. The only reason it works in this day and age is because most faction PvP MMOs have thousands of people on both sides to keep chat lively- and as anyone can tell you, intrafaction chat is usually no more civil than interfaction.
It is bull to claim that /y is nothing but garbage; That's the fault of the people using it, not the function. We used to congratulate or laugh about a really good or funny kill in the game over it; I still see that happening a little, but not often enough.
That said, I would be okay with the ability to filter it out; Very against its total removal. Not so keen on returning it to 5000gu only, though a second command for that would be nice. Maybe use /e for what /y currently is, and return /y to 5000?

Or have a command to disable /y chat. For example: /disable y or /off y because some poeple get really annoyed cuz you get a layer of red chat covering 1/4 of your screen then you get Luth/UGTO/ICC (Depending what faction you are facing) coming from that direction. The first thing your going to do is curse the /y chatters...
