One other complaint I have is that the auto point defense doesn't make very good use of all those beams. I had at least five pulse beams pointing forward and only a few of them were firing at any given time. Even sitting still with the missiles coming right at me, only 1/3 of the missiles were being taken out. Not because the beams were recharging, I wasn't in range, or was out of energy, they just weren't firing. Even Battleships forever has a better point defense system so its alittle annoying. In this way the pulse shield would have been helpful.

Now this may have been fixed in the while since I last actually was heavily into the mechanics of DS, but I believe that is due to a limitation of the Darkspace engine itself.

As I remember it only two beams would auto-fire on projectiles when point defense is enabled, ever. That means you could be completely surrounded by missiles but only two beams would be autofiring at any given time.

This is one reason why the ED was outfitted with half PBs and half SCLs if I recall correctly - the longer ranged SCLs would fire first, then while those are recharging the PBs would engage at the shorter range.

Just a thought. I could be completely wrong & that may have been fixed by now, but it doesn't sound like it.

Coeus is right, i to recall beeing said that a Laser in Point Defence mode would only fire two at a time and until the target is destroyed no other PD will fire.
And a partially recall something about the problem. Something that when they tried to increased the number, multiple lasers would fire at the same target.

I am not sure witch of the following is used but what i have seen is that when a laser discharges at a PD target, it either will have to discharge completely OR, the target has to be verified as Destroyed before another laser will fire as PD.

What i have seen however is that while CL has longer range, the discharge or time it takes to verify that the target is destroyed before the next PD laser can fire. A pulse beam however when it has discharged on a PD target, the next laser will fire.
This gives a array of Pulse beams a higher rate of fire against PD targets but because the range is more limited and only two devices can fire at the same time, the best configuration that i have found would be three pulse beams at a full arch. the other laser slots can better be used as offensive weaponry and should better not be put on PD.
UGTO or K'Luth for that matter don't really have much of a choice to use there strandard (light?) beams.
Note: K'Luth Especially are in a PD disadvantage because of there long recharge time for the Ruptors, its better to cloak or run additional ECM and make the missiles lose target than to use there ruptors for PD.

well the loss of railguns is logical and i prefer to loose them more than loosing lasers ...

take in mind if the ship is purely PD what's fun to play it ? it become 'rare used for specific fleet situation' ship and nothing else ...

atm when equiped properly it can cause some damage to enemy frigates and scouts ....

purpose of escort ship isn't just to deter some missiles but also enemy ships but i doubt You can scare them with pulse wave fireworks ...

I wonder if it is possible for Pulse Beams to hit multiple targets?
Example. One pulse beam could hit up to three missles?

Scanner increases sensor range, it can be handy if you are under siege from missiles. (of course if they are not hidden by ecm)
ECM on a PD boat? bad, bad! replace by ECCM.
ECCM increases signature of everything around it, including missiles. and you don't want stealth missiles passing you unable to PD them, don't we?

[/quote] *Cough* You can change ECM for ECCM *Cough*

@ hellza, sort of, problem is what to do if there is only one missile. Take the energy for three beams or one?

Secondly, the ED and PD aren't half bad against other small ships, even cruisers. The key is knowning when to fire those beams.

Well considering how pulse beams use bugger all energy (back when i was flying ICC ages ago) it would not be horrible loss.
thats if the system is still how Coeus had said. so that ships could have like 2 Pulse beams that could fire up to three pulse beams per volly.

2*3 = 6 missiles being PD'd instead of just 2 being hit at a time.
Even if the pulse beams only fired 2 at a time.

I wish there was a benefit to being the PD ship (prestige wise, or say every 500pd=1 blue enhancement). Fighters are amazingly powerful, and in a situation like one that happened today, where stations or carrier dreads are lobbing fighters back and forth, an ED parked 1500 gu in front of the fleet shooting down fighters, If i could hug him i would!

Yeah I see your logic, problem is each of those beams have to acquire individual targets, which would mean we would have to use the pd function, which incidentally is whats causing this whole conundrum.
