It would be difficult to do a legitimate bang-for-buck comparison since I'm used to newegg.com prices (as opposed to randomly discounted foreign web sites). But here's some info. if anyone is interested.
Here are some good gaming benchmarks to compare current Core i7 to anything AMD has:
http://techreport.com/articles.x/17023/4
In USD, on newegg.com the AMD chip is cheaper pound for pound, so if you went i7 you'd have to drop some of the I/O cost. Of course, in a game like Crysis Warhead, even the i920 beats the X4 955. http://techreport.com/r.x/june09-cpus/warhead.gif
Regarding video, here's a bit from another TR review:
http://techreport.com/articles.x/17102/8
"...we've found that a Radeon HD 4870 1GB CrossFire setup doesn't always scale as well from one GPU to two as a pair of GeForce GTX 260 cards in SLI. From that, we can extrapolate that dual GTX 275s should have a performance edge over their counterparts with red PCBs. On top of that, as we've already said, newer games tend to perform better with Nvidia multi-GPU configs."
Obviously, you said you won't go nVidia, but they are on the top right now (and yes, SLI is winning):

Obviously, the GTX295 is a formidable single-card solution. Add a second one down the line when they get cheap.
On the storage setup:
If you want the fastest level load times, get an SSD. Otherwise, an ordinary WD 1TB drive is perfectly fine, and within a second or two... for gaming, there's really no reason to have a fast harddrive except for level load times. And I suppose installation of the game itself.

My personal advice with a decent budget and no need for big hard drives?
Core i7 920/950 (overclocked to 3.3-4Ghz on aftermarket fan)
3x2GB (6GB total)
Asus P6T (opt. Deluxe)
Western Digital Velociraptor WD3000HLFS 10K RPM, 300GB
nVidia GTX 295

I was quoted £2300 by a company to build it for me, but when I priced up the individual parts myself from places like Overclockers and Dabs I was able to save myself £700-800 and buy the parts and build it myself, so in the end without the monitor which I already owned it was about £1600.
Didnt take long to build, the only problem I really had was the CPU cooler Coolermaster V8 is so big the side door with the 200mm fan wouldn't shut properly but this was easily retified by removing the fan. To compensate for the large missing fan I put three 120mm fans on the top of the case (can fit 6). It keeps it very cool even in the heatwave we had last week when temps were around 30c-32c.
I didnt build it for Darkspace but running it on a 30" monitor at 2560x1600 the fps is between 120fps-250fps, never any graphic lag.

On the other hand it get down to 18c-20c at times and ur type are getting around in shorts and a singlet while I wear 2 layers of jumpers.
Sorry off topic

Yeah I thought it was funny too, was discussing it with an Australian guy who was visiting the university here. But 3 years of crap summers then the temps we had lastweek, we enjoy it while it last.
Anyway back on topic.
