Why can't we get players anymore. Ya, I know, I don't play as much as I used to but hay, its not as much fun playing with yourself!

I know what you mean, but you're covering old ground.
I miss 1.480 scenario mode; more focused, clear goals, more frenetic competing to capture, develop and hold planets for their strategic value and for what they permitted or denied the other side. And the guaranteed big blow-out at the end when time was running out. Newbies and old hands started off as equals and all had a contribution worth making to the shared cause, rank only permitting access to better ships as resources allowed. Consequently dreads and shrooms only appeared later in the game and all smaller ships were worth using at some point.
But, like I said, old ground and it's never coming back. So I'll make do with this (for now).

scenarios made the game, almost as if it was made for it. but, alas, they are taking it in the totally opposite direction of clear fun.

If DS is ever in jeopardy of closing shop, I seriously hope there will be a last-ditch effort made of 2-week free trials for old players to come join the new "FA/GA-server" of the old days. It is something I miss.
