This isn't a formal contest per se, but I want to tap into the creative juices of the gaming population for some ideas on new medals or badges. The usual caveats apply - not all suggestions will be used, your mileage may vary, not valid in all states, no cash value, etc.

Basically: do you have any ideas for new medals that can be added based on easily compiled statistics? Don't get fancy - ie, don't say "4000 ai ships destroyed", since there's no profile category for AI kills. Don't go with "honorable fighter" because there's no way to measure honor.

Do go for anniversary badges (hat tip: Jaydawg) or Kamikaze badges (hat tip: JBud), because they both are easily trackable in the profile.
Do go for something more like Sirius Combat - random things that are combinations of others. Sure they're easy to get, but its a bit of flair that does no harm. Check the manual for the existing medal conditions.

Bonus points if you supply art; either something unique or something on top of the basic shield graphic ... (which I'm sure we have around here cleanly somewhere and will try to provide soon).

No explicit prizes, but I might throw something in if someone is particularly clever, helpful, or whatever.

Go!

Kamikaze Killer Badges

Bronze - 100 kamikaze

Silver - 500 kamikaze

Gold - 1,000 kamikaze

Platinum - 5,000 kamikaze

since kamikaze is a form of combat I used the combat art note: I fixed the images a bit you may need to reload to view them
-----------------------------------------
Badges of Shame

Bronze - 1,000,000 Resources lost - 5 deaths - 5 planet Collisions

Silver - 5,000,000 Resources lost - 50 Deaths - 10 Planet Collisions

Gold - 10,000,000 Resources lost - 100 Deaths - 50 Planet Collisions

Platinum - 30,000,000 Resources lost - 500 deaths - 100 Planet Collisions

-EDIT: added a few variations to make them more rare of a badge

these are epic!
-----------------------------------------

Most Valuble Player Badge

Have 2 or more kills for every death (2:1 K/D Ratio)

I assume it wouldnt be that hard to code that in something like: if 'Killed' *2 is less than 'Kills' then show badge *replace with real code* (thats why I'm not the web editor)

Rare Skillz Badge

Sirius Combat Medal Badge
Defense Medal Badge
Bronze Privateering Badge
Bronze Kamikaze Killer Badge
Most Valuble Player Badge

This is a varient star fury badge it is currently unused I believe
-----------------------------------------
Nukey suggested this so I made one up and it looks nice:

Diamond Engineering (when Platinum just dont cut it)
req 10,000 Construction

also for all the others it's platinum x2 I made the other images aswell

New Moderator Badge!
went with a police star for the backround image

How about brining in assists. A slight fraction of the prestige is given to the other playe(s) if the other ship is destroyed if they took down more than x% hull in the battle.

Mabye give a medal for Kills could be called *Honor Medal* or something else.

Would be counted like lets say

100 Kills= Brave Star Medal
500 kills= Honor Star Medal
1000 kills= Elite Star Medal

And they would be calcualted like if
you have 100 Kills and 55 Killed then
you would have 45 Kills.

Names could be changed too.
And there could be added Ship Damaged to to make it a combination.

Like 1000 Ship damage and 100 Kills = Brave Star Medal

But then Like Killed to minus for kills, then ship damage should have something to minus it to.

Just some ides not sure if anyone would think its good

Griller and I are still waiting for our Planet Smasher medals. Probably scale around 10:50:100:500? Put a tiny ships tail coming out of a tiny explosion coming out of a slightly larger planet. On top of shield. Done. A medal all can gawk at.

And one cant help but wonder where the "friendly fire isnt always friendly" badge is. 100:500:1000:5000 seem doable? Hows about a character with a knife in his back? Or just a little sad face with a single tear?

Just to remind people - this is for badges only.

As far as ideas go from me

Combat Tactition:

if ($kills >= 2*($deaths)) then {
Combat Tactition.
}

Time well spent:
SQL query on the top 10 prestige / time played players (have to be subscribed, and have a rank over Commander).

"SELECT prestige, time played FROM players WHERE prestige >= '640' AND subscribed = '1'"

Use array, get top 10 (or whatever) = badge.

Watch where you're going!
If ($planet_collisions >= ($deaths/2) {
Watch where you're going!
}

I don't like the Kamikaze shields, they are plain and it's just re-using the Combat badges. Can you photoshop a ship ramming a ship with the front of one ship dissappearing into the side of another? Doesn't matter what ships, and which way they face, just a rough draft...i would try myself, but with my lack of photoshop abilities, and lack of the program itself, you see where this is going. :/
Also, for the "Platinum Shame" Badge, i think it should say "EPIC FAIL", as it IS the highest fail acheivable...

Now back to math class. ;(

These look, by and large, great - keep up the good work.

Some feedback on what's been suggested thus far:

Jaydawg: I was originally just thinking of very simple Anniversary badges - basically a badge with a few stars on it, each one corresponding to one year played and just called the "One Year Badge" or whatever... but I kind of like your added flavor. Can't promise anything, and Faustus/Maverick have a penchant for encouraging things to be more straightforward and professional than tongue-in-cheek, so I wouldn't hold out too much hope for a Life is Forfeit Badge, but the theory is a good one regardless.

JBud: Nice. Again with the same caveat about professionalism, not sure if Faustus would like a Fail badge, but I like the idea in general...
And the Kill/Death thing is easy to do; good idea.
The Star Fury Medal used to be that image, but we moved to having it on a shield a while back; I suppose it could again be used alone for something, and having a new combo badge is nice.

Adm Kamina: That'd take a new profile field and new code to track it in-game, so its not possible from the standpoint of the website.

Daedalus Bum: That'd have a bit of overlap with K/D ratios, but its not a bad idea. And throwing in something else to it (or even going with a ratio of ships damaged to kills as something to track, whatever that would imply about your combat skills).

Bito of course goes for the negative stats.. But yeah, having some sort of Demerit category for FF and planet smacks would be an idea.. its just a matter of giving a "reward" (via profile bling, if you will) for doing poorly.. do we want to do that?

JBud: Didn't I already mention you? But yeah, there is a bug with time played for some people.. but given that its the denominator in most calculations (all?), it would be more of a hinderance than anything. And Anniversary badges would go off the Registration Date, so it wouldn't matter for them.

Jack - I like the idea of the "if planets are half your deaths..." though the same problem applies - are we shifting badges from good things to just things? Do we want to?

Your time well spent award would be harder than you might think, Jack, namely due to the fact that Prestige value and the Time Played number are stored in separate tables. Basically, I have to create another table with an ordered list of score/time and then check if the userid is in the top ten. I get the impression doing so would be processor and memory intensive, but I'm not an SQL master, so its hard to say. I just looked up the UNION statement, having never used it before, and think the query would be something akin to this:

SELECT * FROM ((SELECT user_id, score FROM user_data WHERE release=1 AND score>640) UNION (SELECT user_id, value FROM user_ladder WHERE field_id=2) ORDER BY score/value LIMIT 10) WHERE user_id=$userid

Its most probably horribly wrong; I'm no pro, by any means. I can test it on my home WAMP setup later to see how well it actually works, but I suspect it won't be great. But ideally that'd return you something if the player is in the top ten and give you 0 rows if the player is not.. which you can then have within a php if statement; if that if is true, throw down a badge, if its false, do nothing.

I like the idea in general.. it just requires some more work than you thought.. But that's good - its nice to get a mental workout.

Ham&Swiss - Sadly, as we've learned with Mr Privateer, making good looking badges is harder than you'd think - especially when they're about 50x50 pixels. The idea of ramming ships or explosions by planets (Bito) is good, but the implementation is a lot harder than you'd think. Still, if anyone comes up with anything halfway decent, we're happy to steal it...

Anyway - good ideas, all of you. Now the problem is figuring out if we really want the profiles to be twice as big for all the new badge ideas...

Just to add in here - What about Medals?

Badges are for generic goals, Medals for specialist, could even add special event attendance stuff, takes up less room =P

Kinda gives a Uniform aspect.. Must be bit of a pain having all those badges hanging off you.

To Clarify, the left would be the medal, viewable somehow? But the right would show on your profile.

yea I mean you know how hard it was to make those look semi good... I had to cut the combat badge from the black backround ( being as it wasnt a perfect black I had to cut it manually ) then put some shadow in there to hide the black parts i didnt cut. then I had to color them to fit the scale

they were full before right? Draf made all that room by showing only the highest badge so you can add more

also what about another class of badges bronze, silver, gold, platinum, diamond I made the images and they turned out pretty cool looking they are in the post above

I like the jbud's kamikaze idea.

But must be tweaked . Devide kamikaze points with how many self destruction has been made.

numbers are up to you..

Also fail badge is not a good idea. When you have alot of lost resources mean u fly big ships and for a person who played this game for years going to be epic fail badge for the times he/she SDed the station on his enemy.

Why dont you re-consider the idea of fail!?

Remember , ships used to be bought by credits before most of you guys started to play the game.
