Scientia Laboratories Announces Breakthrough Development

Advanced Technology Could Turn the Tide Against K'Luth Threat

SCIENTIA, Epsilion Caranie Aa, May 21, 2269 - Scientia Laboratories today informed the press of an upcoming event, scheduled for this Sunday, May 25, 2269 CE to begin at 14:30 at their headquarters on Scientia. While the lab has so far released very few details, they say that the event will include explanations and a live demonstration of the device. Top brass from UGTO and ICC militaries are expected to be in attendance; security is therefore at an all-time high on the planet, despite the treaty assuring its neutrality.

"We're very excited about this development and think it will have a profound effect upon the safety and security of humanity from the continued alien threat," said Professor Jona G. Applegate, team lead for the project at Scientia. "Following widespread deployment of our development, we should have those beasts on the run in no time."

While most details are still under wraps, some military authorities have already been briefed, and the declaration of the Great Reef being off-limits to civilian craft last week is now suspected of being caused by using the Reef for a private demonstration for the military. As best as can be pieced together from the rumors leaked so far, the discovery has something to do with K'Luth genetics or cellular structure. It apparently has something to do with their growth or health, though as yet the exact effect is unclear.

Some activists are already criticizing the lab claiming that just with the rumors so far, the development could violate the Biopernic Ban, enacted in the aftermath of the great Delta Pavonis Plague of 2249. Even without precise details being known, there is still much fear surrounding biological or genetic weapons, which quickly elicited a response.

"The new development is in no way a Biopernic weapon," assures Vice Admiral Aryal Berrict, commander of the UGTO 3rd Fleet. "Just because the K'Luth are organic and the, er, they are particularly susceptible, let's say, does not mean that it falls under the prohibition. There's really nothing to worry about here. I think Saturday will prove to be a great day for humanity."

In a release provided by her office, Vice Admiral Mina Corbett, head of the Interstellar Cooperation Office at the ICC's Advanced Research Division, stated her support of the lab. "We're very excited about Scientia Lab's great work, and look forward to their demonstration this weekend. We think everyone will be as thrilled about this development as we are, and foresee the worries expressed in some quarters put to rest very quickly after the demonstration."

Scientia has always held a prominent place in the scientific community because of the circumstances of its founding: following the DP Plague, the UGTO and ICC governments agreed to set aside a planet in Epsilion Caranie Aa as neutral territory to study the effects of the virus on the system, and ensure that the planets were safe to recolonize. The lab is funded jointly by the ICC and UGTO governments, with contributions fixed via the Scientific Cooperation and Joint Research Treaty, and works on issues germane to all of humanity. The laboratory is one of the major locations for unofficial discussions between the two governments, due to the near-constant hostilities of the two and Scientia's guaranteed neutrality.

Supplementary Information:

Scientia Laboratories would like to inform pilots attending the demonstration of the following information:

- The Laboratory and the world where it is headquartered is protected by treaties and interstellar norms and is not and will not be the site of any hostilities. Ships arriving or departing are given safe passage out of courtesy to the special arrangements governing the site. If you wish to fight someone, please do so out of range of any experiments or onlookers.

- All visitors are welcome, no matter your political affiliation, so long as you respect the rules laid out above.

- Our tests will involve a number of small objects, followed by a few large ones. However, some of the larger objects have a tendency to fragment following the testing, so we recommend ships come with fully charged shields or strong armor, as available.

- Due to the difficulty in targeting the smaller objects, as well as the number of fragments from the larger, we request all ships bring beacons. This will aid in the demonstrations, as well as greatly assist cleanup.
Flying a ship without beacons will not mean you can't watch the demonstration, but you will not be able to participate fully without them. Thus, we strongly encourage everyone to have at least one beacon on their ship.

- The glare filters on your viewscreens should be set to a minimum of 7.2 in order to avoid harmful exposure.

- The viewing is best paired with a nice Chianti; the 2266 Cache Valley from Orayaan is a particular favorite of the lab's staff.
