We can't use GIF's in the resourcer, and although we could reformat them, they're far too low quality to use, and not what we're looking for.

I like your designes but whether by your hand, the program, or the upload process, they seem out of focus or low resolution. I think that is what people are seeing and commenting on but fix that and the designs themselves will be sound.

Okay.
First off, you need to do more then scripple on a black canvas and blur it out to call it a texture, or even a nebula. They have to be abit more detailed.
Use This as an example of a good starter nebula to try and model after.
I did this in about five minutes of work. It isnt really much, but it's got the basic shape.
Google tutorials on how to make Nebula, or space scenes, in Photoshop. You could also try randomly doing things and seeing how it comes out.

I really think DarkSpace is a beautiful game to begin with, and I wouldn't want it to improve any more graphically simply because that would detract from fixing all of the other non-graphical problems with this game!
Because graphics mean much less to me than gameplay.
With that, I won't say your images are bad because... well, I don't think they're bad. I don't feel strongly for them - they don't affect me. I do like two of them, and they're the "DarkSpace" images that you made. The one with all of the lines looks cool.
Admittedly, you did open yourself up to feedback of all kinds whenever you posted this here... they're being honest, and so am I. No need to lie to you.
Also, Doran... the second "as" link... the JackSwift School of Art... wow. That brought back way too many memories. I'm tempted to drop Photoshop tonight (I don't have classes on Tuesday, so I have a free schedule) and see what I can do again with MS Paint. I won't be able to do anything with the Command Carrier, since I just don't use it anymore (since it has bombs, which are almost worthless to me). But I'll see what else I can do.
...I've missed Paint so much. o_o
- Edit: Minor typo fixt. Also noticed Crim posted before me... and I changed absolutely nothing because of it.

I am sorry I did not have time to find the exact font he used in his so called original art, but there you go.
