I think the mods said in the past that bringing back .480 would be impossible. Don't remember the thread, though.

No, it's verily impossible, as the old codes for 1.480 were overwritten when the new patches came in, and noone saved the old configuration. Or so they say.
And as for 'Death Star' planets, those were awesome....and the days of mass bio bombing.

The memories of the battles that used to be waged in FA during those times is what keeps me coming back here, hoping that those glory days will return. ahhhh it was good.... even if ecm forts were annoying... didnt have to restructure the entire game to fix that...... ahwell ill be waiting

Everyone did kinda miss the focus, .480 is just something I always ask for.
What seems to be impossible is people just being tolerant of each other.
That was the whole point

Awesome didn't cover it by comparison.
Everything essentially took a concentrated effort, it wasn't about individual players in a sense, it was a team effort to do much of anything. Although it was very possible to fly solo of course, but it was much more fun I thought, to play as a team, with the team and objective being first priority.
I enjoyed it very much and haven't played since .480.

No CVS?
Not bashing shiggyrandermuffin, just curious. Although I think we've had this conversation before.
For everyone else, I'll give you the simple version of why a rollback will never happen.
For one, if the codebase is in a cvs, it "is" entirely possible to rollback to whatever version the cvs has.
The problem is this, if a rollback does occur, every single code improvement would be lost(I don't mean wormholes or shipyards), it could be improvments to the networking code or even anything that's a real improvement would be lost in a rollback.
The only workaround is to actually copy all the code into a different cvs or backup, and then rollback the original. AND THEN try to integrate the new code into the old version. This would be extremely time consuming and labor intensive if you consider how much code would have to be used from the current version and integrating it into the old. Not to mention this might introduce some insane bugs, as the new code modules or stand alone code might not behave with the old code.
The only other alternative is just as extreme. Roll back to .480 and then start from there making all new improvements.
So I'll just ask one question; Has anyone ever heard of any software package being rolled back that far by user request? Q3? HL2? Any other package or game?
There is one other alternative that hasn't been suggested yet.
It's entirely possible(In my experience with a certain CVS package) to retrieve a snapshot of .480 from the CVS(if it's even being used at all).
If it is and enough of the community would help out, Richard could either sell the .480 code base or license it to GPL and the community could fork DS.
The problem with this is simple, if we're all right, and we do get a project fork up and running and it's better than the original branch, what do you think that would do to Richard's project? Kill it, that means no revenue and this version of DS(the original community would die.
On the same note, I would love to get my hands on the .480 source.
But you have to remember, the majority of us want DS to go in a different direction than it is. But my understanding is that, what devs there are, are working hard to restore the playability and fun to DS. And also remember that none of us, not even the devs "own" DS and every decision is ultimately his.
Also I could be quite wrong about the CVS. I just don't know, I've never had access to the "back end". And not to mention the title of the thread, "An Impossible Request".

I think I once heard a rumor that there is a copy of 1.480 lying around... but in order to restore it that would require EEEEVVVVEEERYTHING being restored to the status of the backup - most notibly player profiles. Anything after probably about the 95000 mark on User IDs would be GONE, and all prestiges of the remaining accounts will be reset to their counts at the time of the backup... so pretty much Coombie would be the only one unaffected
Again, just a rumor I think I may have heard...
