I've been poking around Beta a bit recently, and I like the look of some of the proposed changes. I do have some problems, however.

Missiles still follow the old tradition of launching in a pre-defined direction and then turning to track their target. This, to me, is one of the biggest reasons why they aren't that effective. It spreads them out and ensures that they don't all arrive at the same time, making it easy for a ship with even minimal point-defenses to take them out. They also have very lousy tracking; heck, I've flown in a straight line before and had entire salvos miss completely.

IMHO, missiles need to launch directly towards their target (like every other weapon does), and need an improved turn rate so they can hit reliably. Otherwise they're always going to be a third-rate weapon, useful only in a few limited situations.

The problem with that is point defence is pretty retarded when theirs a bunch of missiles coming at once, they like to waste their shots on being blown up objects. Not to mention only one point-defence laser unit can fire at a time (fire, wait 200 miliseconds, another one fires), another serious flaw.

also, http://beta.darkspace.net/index.htm?module=forums.php&page=/viewtopic.php?topic=42333&forum=36&7 had some relevant discussions on this topic.

edit: Also Jim, nice to see you're still around

Except I know that isn't really a hardcoded limitation. I've watched planetary PD grids target and destroy dozens of missiles/bombs at a time. Why can't shipboard PD do the same?

More then likely, theirs two different methods that handle point defence, one for planets, and one for ships.

the ship one sucks.

The problem with the planet and ship PD is most likely that a ship has 1 laser for every device where the defense base has several, i think the Dbase had more "freedom" to distribute targets than the 4 seperate devices on your ship.

very nice to see your still alive Jimmy, going to pull the destroyer out of the mothballs?

Y'know, I do remember having an oldschool Combat Dessie in my hangar the last time I logged into the Metaverse...no idea if it's still there or not.
