Another problem with your theory, Sparkle..

You seem to think that the player base will be as low as it is now in .484, which I'm hoping it wont be.

Meaning we'll have a constant player base on all factions all day..

While everyone's been talking about beams and shields, might I point out that, in 483 at least, defence bases also fire huge numbers of missiles at anyone who gets within 2,000 gu? For smaller ships, combat near an enemy planet becomes very difficult, and for dreadnaughts and stations it's virtually suicidal, by my experience. Trying to get away is even more difficult, because the missiles can track a retrating target more easily than an advancing one.

That's a fairly important part of the planetary attack/defence formula, methinks.
