Obviously not a high priority here, but a pet peeve of mine nonetheless.

Can the default adjustment on the velocity bar be adjusted to 0.1 gu/s increments? Depending on the ship class involved I end up with adjustments of 0.3gu/s which seems to be an odd number.

Moreover, being the future and all, one would think that if the Captain ordered a certain speed, you wouldn't see the Nav Officer sitting there adjusting speed up and down until the target speed is achieved. (I can just envision Lt. Sulu cursing and smashing his console in frustration)

My suggestion would be 0.1gu/s increments for mouse drag on the velocity bar and 0.5gu/s for the arrow keys (or Q/W for those that use those keys).

Could possibly be an (easy?) side project while Faustus is doing other coding.

Keyboard thing I agree with, mouse would more of a difficult because each user has their own detection on their mouse, and that the game itself seems to have its own, so the bar may have to be larger, or more sensitive... However, a button/text area to set the exact speed would be neat aswell.

I saw this in a game once, and it seemed like a great idea for easy speed change - maybe we can rip it off a tad.

n = Neutral. The ship's speed indicator is set to zero
1 = one fourth. The ship's speed indicator is set to 1/4 max
2 = one half. The ship's speed indicator is set to 1/2 max
3 = 3 quarters. The ship's speed indicator is set to 75 cents..I mean 3/4max
F = Flank speed. The ship's speed indicator is set to Full.

of course, on the bottom, it's out of place. I drew it in two suggested places.

random comment: why is their no reverse in darkspace?

There's no reverse because the "beep beep" sound is to hard to make (I don't know, I wish there was but there'll probably never be as far as I can tell)

I like the idea of settable speeds, 1/4, 1/2 etc. however there are a few problems that would have to be dealt with. Primarily the issue of bombing. Would bombers have a speed that was equal to their bombs so they could still cloud bomb, or would cloud bombing be removed and defense adjusted accordingly (much harder but, at least in my opinion, better)

rolf the idea of ships traveling reverse at full speed would be so funny

Every game with pure newtonian physics.

Does. Not. Work

Reason for no reverse in darkspace: Ships don't have giant engines in the front. They only have maunevering thrusters.

In light of that, they actually have thrust reversers for airplanes already. Unless ofcourse you havent seen modern jet aircraft before. How does it work?, simple just redirect the exaust the opposite direction.

And keep in mind that it is a futuristic game, so more efficent thrust reversing merchanisms should be possible.
So yes moving full speed backwards is a bad idea, but the idea with the capability to travel reverse at a slower could work.

I have an engine. it produces x number of force over y number of distance in z number of time. We call these Watts.

now, we accelerate this engine to a random speed.

to slow it back down to zero (no friction in space), we need the same number of watts in the oposite direction.

unless you have two engines on a ship: ~()=^======()~
making it look ugly, you would have to take a reduction in either the ammount of time it takes to slow down or the distance it does so. or teh force. etc. to fit it into a smaller package.

otherwise, the smaller, more effecient engine would go as the main engine array

I have not idea what your talking about but, by slowing down a ship, your essentially using a method of sending the thrust in the opposite direction your going, so you should be able to go in a reverse direction if you continue to diret your thrust that way. Yes logically you might be able to go full speed, but in the game maybe going reverse in 25% of max forward velocity could make the game more intresting.

As much as I hate to keep this discussion going further off topic...

You are basing this on the assumption that one would start going in reverse from a static postion or braking and reversing along the same path. The truth of the matter is that you don't need main engines facing forward, all you need is manouevering thrusters to change the facing of the ship. You saw this alot during the battle sequences in Babylon 5, well for the fighters anyway - the Capital ships probably could do it as well but I assume in the B5 Universe they were designed around weapon platforms.

In the real world, you see the Space shuttle travel in reverse for braking in preparation for re-entry. Of course there is a reason for this, something you don't see in Darkspace - inertia. If inertia was accounted for in the DS engine, combat would be wildly different.

As for flat out flying in reverse, I'd say no. All the ships are designed around forward movement only. Look at how many people have a hard time getting used to the Broadside aspect of the current ICC Combat Dreadnought, most ships would need to be redesigned entirely.

okay, let's end it here then.

Maunevering thrusters changes your direction. It does NOT change the ammount of momentum your ship has.

you would need reverse thrusters. as in, thrust being applied in the opposite direction of the current momentum.
