Unfortunately, the new, revolutionary tracking system for Ship to Ship missiles implemented by all Navies had a defect that nobody foresaw.

Yasiglov, a UGTO weapons designer, after years of hard research, came up with the new "Artemis" tracking system, designed for the larger IT missile. The tracking system used new technology to scan the target, judge its speed, as well as monitor plasma currents deep within the hull and engines, therefore forseeing changes in direction and speed in the target. This tracking system was supposed to be superior in all ways but one: weight. This system, if retrofitted and outfitted into all existing IT missiles, would increase their accuracy to 100% for all Dreadnaught class vessels, 95% for all Cruiser class vessels, 85% for all Frigate class vessels, and 70% for Corvette class ships.

However, the problem that arose was this: in order to fit the extra weight of the new system, the engines of all (IT 1.483) Missiles had to undergo a slight, inexpensive upgrade to their engines to handle this extra weight, without loosing speed.

At about this time, covert ICC operatives working in the UGTO High Command security forces were able to steal these plans, copy them, replace them, and deliver them safely to Admiral Jarefaied, who was in orbit in a civilian transport.

At 1150, the standard time for the UGTO Expeditionary Force to Luyten, these new missile saw first light in combat. Against the first line of defending ICC Dreadnaughts, the missile saw great sucess, disabling or destroying over half the defenders. (the ICC had yet to implement the Artemis tracking system)
However, as the battle continued, problems arose. Against the nimble ICC Cruisers, the missiles suffered horrible accuracy rates. The UGTO Admirals could not understand it. Most missiles fired missed their mark completely. The UGTO, assessing the situation, quickly ordered all ships to switch to close range weapons, and closed in, before the ICC realized the UGTO missile had a grevious defect.

The UGTO fought hard, but were eventually repelled by defending ICC forces. On all fronts, the UGTO encountered this defect, but the reason was not to be realized until the ICC implemented the missiles (the ICC Security Council had not told them the tracking systems were UGTO tech, and therefore no one knew they were defective) ICC ships, a large majority using missiles as their primary weapons, were rendered near useless. The ICC Confederate Navy suffered setbacks on all fronts, and the UGTO resumed their offensive (though with considerably less use of the Artemis system).

The ICC, seeing as they were suffering far more so than the UGTO, invested far much more research into why the missiles were failing. The reason was finally made clear, when ICC scientists conducted a series of controlled tests in Exathra orbit.

The missiles were too fast for their own good. While UGTO scientists had stated that an upgraded engine system was needed for the IT missiles to keep their speed and manuverability, they did not forsee the problem in this. Though they would take longer to accelerate with the normal engines, eventually they would reach max speed and be as fast as the original IT missiles. However, with the new upgraded engines, they not only accelerated faster, but had a MUCH faster max speed. While this helped the missiles reach their targets faster, it played hell with the Artemis tracking system. The missiles were engaging their targets at speeds unforseen, and with the target ships on different trajectories and speeds of their own, the missile's mass just couldn't keep up with the Artemis' advanced systems. Inertia kept the missile wanting to go on their original path, and with the faster speed they were going at, it became harder to realign the missile to hit the target cleanly.

The UGTO Imperial Navy and the ICC Confederate Navy have yet to refit the missiles to prior status. After taking just shy of two years to refit all the existing IT missiles with the upgrades, it is estimated that un-fitting them will take yet another year and a half. For now, the missile operate, but at a substandard rate. Still, missile units are essential enough that they are still used, though with inferior missiles, and in less numbers. (Albeit the massive ICC Missile Dreadnaught)
