Early today, all of the approximately two hundred million communication links to the planet Venus were suddenly terminated. A UGTO Sol system Patrol Fleet was dispatched from its normal patrol route to investigate. Upon completion of the jump, the Patrol Fleet immediately noticed an anomaly in its atmosphere, a vast blue cloud.
UGTO High Command’s top scientists have already determined what happened and have released a report. In the third Cortex Nexus of the Venus Research Facilities, UGTO scientists obtained a small sample of K’luth Bio Bomb material. The quantity was incredibly small, at a mere 0.372 cubic nanograms. The purpose of the analysis was to understand how the Bio Bombs work on a quantum level, so a kind of gene therapy could be developed to make all UGTO citizens immune to such weapons.
The material must be kept in vacuum conditions at all times. Upon contact with any other form of matter, such as the surface of a barren planet, or an atmosphere, the Bio Bomb material reacts by immediately converting into vast quantities of deadly solar radiation.
All life on Venus has been eradicated. However, the scientific instruments of the experiment remain in perfect working order and have displayed what went wrong. It seems a single atom of Helium was improperly formed in the fusion generator, not far from the Cortex Nexus. From that unstable atom, a single Neutron got loose and ran straight through the thick armor shielding and electromagnetic shielding around the Bio Bomb material. The material reacted instantaneously upon contact with the Neutron and the blast wave was released.
In a normal Bio Bomb, most of the bomb is just containment equipment for the material. A single bomb holds only a few atoms of the actual material, so the amount in the Cortex Nexus was more than enough to destroy all life on Venus. The blue cloud is residue from the excess material and has permanently damaged the atmosphere. This once toxic planet, now terraformed to an arid world, no longer has the capacity to someday become a terran world.
The Only Survivor
Not all is a waste, though, as a single child has been found to have survived where all else perished. The child was found in the very lab that housed the Bio Bomb material, and is showing to be completely unharmed… That is, on the genetic level. The child had only 128 cells at the time it was discovered by the recovery team. It was in a test tube, and being tested by the scientists searching for the vaccine to the Bio Bombs. It seems they succeeded just before they were killed. The child is being grown in a maturation chamber and will be cloned thousands of times over to be dissected for experimentation until the genetic immunity vector can be isolated.

On a sidenote, is a cubic nanogram a real unit? To me that's like saying "My car weighs 1.5 square metric tons."

normally mass would be a 1 dimensional unit, but I assumed that in their advanced science future, that perhaps they found mass to be 3 dimensional.

Well considering an object can be acted upon by more than one force of gravity, it seems that it would be possible that there could be more than one dimension to that of weight, but not of mass.
