i was thinking....what if we could have computer controlled escorts....but have to pay for them? have 2 the max....maybe. and have them fly in a formation. that would be cool. and give them fireing orders....that would take alot of work on the screen it think.. what do you guys think?

Wut Ranny said!

It would also take development time away from 1.484, which is what's needed at the moment.

1.484 is sorting the lag.

The one problem with comp controlled escorts would be the fact that computer controlled objects have a tendency to do crazy things, like flee the fight so they can get a better angle of attack or not fire weapons until well within range...I say, fix the lag, fix the AI, then possibly add in escorts of some kind...

if Escrots were restricted to scout and Frigates, maybe the PD and ED too, then it could be a workable idea.
Of course, the AI scripting would need to be updated so that you could order them to follow you, and they would be able to fire freely unless you have a target selected - in which case they would attack your target, and fall back to formation once it dies.

Problems would be the hefty fee's involved. The hire cost would need to be higher than the hired debris value, to prevent player intentionally crashing them into planets. Another concern would be supply ships hiring escorts and sitting them just within the range of a planet, and farming them for supply prestige. The AI code would definately need updating so that ships automatically move away from enemy planets when getting damaged.

A good idea in principle, but there are for too many ways for it to be exploited atm. Definately something worth considering though, for future versions.

no, dreads and stations should get escorts, like little ships wich you can put a few weapons on (1 or 2?)

Hmmm, about the supply thing. Couldn't you set it so you didn't gain repair pres from repairing your escorts? I don't know how the code works, but setting the flag so it resembled when you supp yourself might be possible. That way it couldn't be exploitable in that area. Probably a problem with that, but eh, you can find it for me ; )

good idea for when/if grouping is brought back
any* ship class is available for recruiting, however you can only have 1 ship of particular class in the group**, say a frig and a dessie, but not 2 frigs or 2 dessies.

*basic combat version or nearest equivilant of any given class, ie gunboat dessie, not assault, heavy cruiser, not AC

**max 8 ships per group, scenario servers can restrict group size (like 4 for newbie, 6 for admiral) or available classes
