Ok all you brits. Heres the news, im upgrading. This is what i currently have. An old etower,
Intel Celeron Processor 733MHz
Operating System: Microsoft® Windows® Millennium Edition
Chipset: Intel 810 chipset, 66MHz FSB
Memory: 64MB SDRAM (1 DIMM available for upgrade up to 256MB)
Hard Drive: 20GB HDD
Optical Drive: Built-in 48x Max. CD-ROM; 3.5" 1.44MB FDD
Video: Intel Direct 3D 2x AGP (shared memory)
Sound: Intel 82801 AC '97 Audio
Modem: 56K ITU v.90 PCI internal Fax/Modem

Well i think its what i got, And yes its older than me. well nearly.
Its struggling, (i.e cant play anything newer that 3 years old,)
It has been upgraded to 256MB, and it copes with DS remarkably well.
Looking to spend no more than 600 to 700 quid.
As you know im computer illiterate. can switch it on and plug it in. And play games. And its my birthday. so whats the deals out there.
ANd yes i would love an XPS 600, but computer says NO. tm Little Britain.

Update, its a etower 110 machine with 10 gb not 20.
monitor is about 16" x14". weighs a ton.
i have a 8182 graphics controller and the visual thingy is set to 1024 x 768 high colour 16 bit.
does that help??

chances are oyu will be wantigna new monitor then. Yeah it helps. I'll see what kind of deals I can find for you.
I deally it will be something that doesnt have the important stuff intergrated (IE graphics) and be an Athlon based system as the performance is usaully a lot better for gaming and on price. Also the upgrade path on AMD is a little more reliable compared to Intel machines.
You can get some good fully intergrated packages, but if you want to consider upgrading parts of the new machine in future( like the GFX card and more memory), especially for gaming purposes, then they are a bad choice.

you will defenently want to go with AMD Athlon. and for the graphics, go with nVidia. you can get a decent computer for a good price, especially if you build it yourself. and people here can help you with that. including me. i am very computer literate.

Here's a system for ya..
Bundle: Case, Asus Mb, 512meg ram, AMD 64bit 3200
Sapphire Radeon 9600Xt (agp 256meg)
DVD rewriter
300gig harddrive
half decent keyboard n' mouse
Unbranded 8ms 19" TFT
Total £621.90
It's a really basic system, but it'll do a fine job. Leaves you £80 to spend on more ram or Xp pro or whatever.
You could save money and get a better system by buying the case, motherboard, cpu and memory seperately. But I figure you wouldn't be up to putting it all together. I would seriously suggest you do though, as the bundled deal only gives you 2 spare PCI slots. A slighty better Mb would give you 5.
So, all the bits seperately;
Mediocre case
AMD 64 3200 venice
Asus MB with expansion potential
1Gig Corsair value ram
Near silent heatsink and fan
Total £648.69
Consider spending the remaining money on a PCI-E versions of the Mb and Gc.

I used to work for emachines.. all their computers suck.. especially the ones labelled "eTower"(discontinued in 1999) Im surprised it still even RUNS....

well if your gonna build your own systen try goin to a computer fair you can get a really cheap and really good system im building one my self gonna cost me bout £200 not quite finished yet jjust need to save my money up i sofar have a motherboard case and 60hdd all for £100 n the rest wont come to more than 120 maybe 130.

Here are a couple of optiosn for you. One question I forgot to ask is do you use dial-up or broadband internet access?

Neither of these systems include a monitor - if you are happy with your current model then there is no need to get a new one. Similarly, neither PC comes with a modem, but you have the option to steal the existing one from your current system and install it, or specify a modem to be included. (If you have broadband then this becomes a mute point). A new modem would add somewhere between £5-£50, but I think that money would be better off in getting a broadband connection if you dont have it already.
