Sadly I had a simular experiance on Border Patrol duty once...

My team and I were a hidden observation team watching for people crossing the borders. A huge storm came in that weekend and we had to dig in for the evening to keep from getting blow away in the dessert sand storms.

Sometime after midnight the radio crackles to life, and when we respond we get told there is movement to the south of the border, approximately 800 yards away. So we pull out the Night Vision Googles and peer around. Nothing out of the ordinary, we call back to the vehicle unit that we have negative contact.

The Sgt in charge of the vehicle team was ademant there was something south of his position 800 yards. So we pull out the thermals and scan the area, again, nothing shows up on the thermals. We radio back again that there is negative contact.

At this point he gets pissy and asks if we can see his position. Rest of the conversation went as such...

Vehicle Commander: Can you see my position?

Me: Wait one... (Scan with the Night Vision).. Roger that, we have you at 1.2 clicks out from our position at two seven zero, stationary facing One Eight Zero.

Vehicle Commander: Thats correct, now look directly ahead of my position 800 meters out...

Me: Wait one, scanning... (Scan the dessert in front of them up and out to 3 miles and back in...) Roger Vehicle commander, stand by for confirmation...

*Switch Channels*
Me: Recon 1 to Recon 2, need confirmation on visual at grid. xxxx.xxxx

Recon 2: Recon 1 this 2, negative contact.

*Switch Channels back*
Me: Vehicle commander, we have confirmation... THATS A FARM HOUSE... OVER...

60 second pause...
Vehicle Commander: Roger that, over and out...

(The idiot was looking at the windmill spinning in the wind and thought he saw movement...)

Actually Ceaser, being a 19 1/2 Navy veteran I have been on the bridge and combat direction center during queries of other vessels... Normal policy is to identify your self as "US Navy Warship"... Query Procedures prohibit you from identifing your ship name thus identifing ship type and capabilities...

This story is what you call a "Urban Legand"... though the stories in the US Navy have it as a Spruance Class Destroyer as the true culprit for this story.

Anyways it is still funny and there was actually a vid clip made for this... was too funny. Was either a British or Australian company that did it.... if anyone can find it you should post it... it was too funny...
