This is my first attempt at fan-fiction, and I have ideas for a second chapter. Let me know what you think.

In a time where metal giants frequently clashed in the skies above ravaged planets, countless innocents died every day and war-torn systems changed allegiance every few months, it was important to cherish the brief periods of relative peace.

These were the thoughts of UGTO Admiral Samuel Keyes, seated on the bridge of his ship moments before it completed its jump.

The war with the ICC so far had been going in their favour. Now that the K’luth threat had all but disappeared, the ICC had shifted its attention squarely on the UGTO and several successive ICC victories had nearly pushed them back as far as the Barnard’s Star system, well short of the ultimate target: Exathra. A week later, the UGTO had launched a massive, yet costly, counterattack, which had so far paid off, and they were now in the process of claiming the fiercely contested Nicea system. Spearheaded by the charismatic Grand Admiral Zachariah Logo, the campaign had kept the ICC on the back foot skirmish after skirmish.

After almost three days without a single enemy sighting, Logo had grown impatient and had ordered a modest number of ships to jump to the last known coordinates of the ICC fleet and engage them.

Keyes had been given command of the flotilla. He was under no illusions as to why: it was because he was deemed “expendable”. There were few enough military commanders above his position as it was, without risking them on ventures into enemy territory that could easily turn into suicide missions. His Assault Dreadnought, the Stormcrow, was of the Elite-class, but a model several years older than the gleaming specimens his superiors refused to engage the enemy with. Her insignia was faded, her superstructure creaked under the forces of acceleration, and her Number 2 ion engine was the source of much frustration and profanity from the engineering decks. She had character, Keyes granted her that much, and the only time he ever wished to be in command of another ship was when the water dispensers gave him a fluid just the wrong shade of white.

“Three seconds to reversion!” came a cry from the navigator’s station.

An argent halo surrounded the Stormcrow as she slowed from tachyon’s speed, and Keyes found himself looking at a small, barren planet, with one of the most bizarre ring systems he had ever seen. The motley layer orbiting the planet was composed of darkened rocks in widely varying size and shape; some no bigger than two meters, and almost star shaped, some several hundred times the size, with both smooth and painfully jagged edges.

Then Keyes remembered that this planet didn’t have a ring system.

He looked closer.

Then he understood, and he began to feel dread in the pit of his stomach.

“What happened here?” he whispered incredulously.

His bridge crew could only stare in disbelief, for circling the dust-ridden planet were the burned and ruptured hulks of the ICC ships, and the odd star shapes, which had seemed so out of place, were people.

It seemed that the entire enemy fleet in this system had been annihilated in one fell swoop. News of such a shattering blow to the ICC would’ve hugely boosted morale for the UGTO war effort, and further glorified Logo, so why didn’t anyone know? The only logical conclusion Keyes could come to, was that this was not the doing of UGTO, no matter how much he wanted to believe that it was.

So if they hadn’t done this, who had?
