The Name Game
Tanks got their name from a diversionary tactic. The Allied forces built the first tanks in absolute secrecy because they wanted to catch the Germans off guard. In order to conceal their plan, they told the workers building the weapons that the machines would be used to transport water on the battlefield. They shipped the machines in crates marked "tank," and the name stuck. The M1 Abrams is named after the late General Creighton W. Abrams, who served as Army Chief of Staff and commander of the 37th Armored Battalion. The M1 is informally known as "The Beast," "Dracula" and "Whispering Death," referring to its impressive firepower and quiet operation. ~ http://www.specialope.netfirms.com/M-1%20Tank.html

Yes... there have been talks about a railgun tank. I have actually seen with my own eyes a video clip of the controlled test version of the proposed design. They said they were going test a version of the gun on an Abrams Tank if they could figure out the one problem. According to what the man said on the short video clip was they couldn't currently develop a power supply that would develop the power to deliver the kenetic enery killing rounds at the velocities required while still remaining small enough to be practical.
Yes they are "Whispering Death" because of the Gas Turbine engine it uses. It sounds just like a jet engine.
Interesting true personal Story: I have a friend who was a Abrams Tank Commander at the time. In the original M1 they didn't have speed governers so my friend wanted to find out how fast one could go all out. They had installed the "Road Treads" which are small desposable blocks that attach to the treads that will wear down to prevent damage to road ways made of concrete, blacktop and such.
Anyways while out on manouvers in California they descided they had the perfect chance to find out what it's top speed was. They dove it out onto a two-lane back country highway and cranked it up. They said they didn't know how fast they were going except it was the time of their life till they heard a siren from behind after they had passed an overpass. It seemed thye had picked up a CHP (California Highway Patrol) car. They promptly pulled over and watched as the Officer approached the tank. The CHP Officer looked up at the top of the turret as my friend popped up out of the hatch.
He asked my friend for his drivers licence and wrote him a speeding ticket.
How fast was he going you ask? The CHP Officer had clocked him at 63 mph.

the problem about some russian autoloaders is that
they would (sometimes) grab the gunner's arm and
load it along with the current round. unplesant day
for the gunner. and the fact that it took (i think)
**both** hands for the gunner to properly operate
the main gun...
and a WWII russian tank required that the turret
be rotated to align with the front of the tank and
elevated to like +10 degrees so that it could be
loaded... i forget which tank thou... need to dig out
my M-1 Tank Platoon manual out again... not only
good reference to the game but lots of interesting
information about war and tanks in general.
i miss the old microprose.

i think the us will have a huge problem getting the powersupply for that tank if they put those lasers on it. there is a modded boing flying now that needs the enitre feusalage to house the power supply for the laser that is used to detonate missles in mid air
