I had no idea how to fix this, but I tried DirectX Properties in Control panel and I noticed under the Direct3D tab, that 'Allow Hardware Acceleration' was NOT checked. Neither were 'Enumerate Ramp Rasterizer' and 'Enumerate Reference Rasterizer'.
So, I checked all three boxes, ran dxdiag, Tested Direct3D, everything worked fine, then started up DarkSpace and it worked!

uncheck the enumerate one's these are for devolpers to test things out and will slow down your performance

well nvidia gfxcard seems to be a major prob for this game - i tried all kind of gfxcard - from viper 4 MB to 3d lab onyx 458 MB - never had a problem but nvidia (just a nice box with nonstandard gfxcard) so my advice:
trash this babies and get u a descend gfxcard!
