Chapter 1
------------

The pitter-patter of raindrops and a chill wind blowing through a small broken gap in the window produced an eerie effect, akin to someone whistling to the quiet beat of a heart. The storm outside had picked up within the last hour, claps of thunder accompanied by a flash of lightning making any sleep tonight difficult, fitful at best. The rustle of covers and the light tread of a footstep on soft carpet betrayed the restless state of the first year cadet as he rose from his bed and stepped towards the window. The momentary creak of a floorboard beneath his foot gave him time to hesitate, a moment of panic, lest he waken the other boys in the dormitory, or worse, alert the academy teachers in the room next door. Reaching out a hand in the dark, he placed it gently against the window, welcoming the cool touch of glass upon his skin. It was moments like this, in the dead of the night, when he could close his eyes and almost feel at one with the elemental forces of nature, the rain hitting his face and pouring over him, an almost cleansing sensation.

Moving still closer to the window, his breath misted the glass as he looked up into the night sky. His thoughts raced through the endless possibilities of exploration, the wonders of deep space, and with them the unknown horrors that might lie in wait. His gaze shifted to a cluster of incredibly bright stars, the myriad of sparkles gaining his attention, as they blinked into and out of existence at random intervals.

‘K’luth’, the boy thought to himself, a word he was not familiar with, a word which seemed to mould his imagination, conjuring a vast scene of fleets engaged in a clash of epic proportions. He pictured himself, standing on the bridge of the flagship, his flagship, knowing with absolute certainty that whilst thousands would die at his command, their deaths would not be meaningless. The burden would be his alone, for his responsibility would be to lead the forces of humanity in one last final stand against an enemy so alien as to be beyond description. The consequences, too disastrous to imagine, failure would not and could not be an option.

Lost in the moment, the boy was unaware of the door opening up behind him, this new person, a teacher from next door, closing the door, before making his way down the dormitory. After a quick check of the other bunks, he shook his head as he arrived to stand at the side of his student, now totally lost in dreams of command and conquest. Resting a hand on the distracted boy’s shoulder, a deep, calm voice brought him crashing back to reality.

‘Your time will come Teager, for the K’luth are coming for you’.

The cadet, Teager, turned his head sharply at mention of his name and his imaginary enemy. He backed away quickly, watching, as the head of his teacher and mentor seemed to twist and shape into some indescribable horror, the torso shooting out an extra pair of chitin covered arms, a set of pincers in place of hands. The creature, registering in the back of his mind as a K’luth warrior, moved as if to grab hold of young Teager, whispering his name as it approached. He screamed, shouting, ‘Let go, let go’ as a half filled mug of coffee hit him square in the face, waking him from his nightmare.

‘Teager, shut the hell up, it’s five in the morning’, groaned Jack, leaning down from the bunk above, his words trailing off as he realised that Teager had stopped screaming and was now fully awake, his eyes wide open.

‘Same damn dream, just seemed so real!’ replied a tired sounding Teager, as he shock his head and prepared for his first day at Gagarin Naval Academy.
