Ok Bug report first:
Ok, there's some kind of issue going on w/ dictor fields, sometimes they're not working, flat out, ask thugonomics, we managed to jump out from inside a dictor field at 300gu from the planet, he should recall the incident as well as i. there have also been times where the interdictor field from the cruiser isn't working on ships that are well within range, this needs to be examined please!
on to the suggestion:
i enjoyed the fact that you didn't know if you were in a dictor field or not, as nice as the annoucement is, the actual graying out of the jump drive icon and not allowing a player to try is a bit too much "babying" i think, in addition i enjoyed being able to "e-jump" inside a dictor field and get a 200-guish "push" from the failed jump.
i essence i think it would be added value to the game to:
1. not gray out the jumpdrive automagically for players
2. allow people to "fail" their jumps, either on purpose, or because they forget they are in a dictor field.

if you remember things were done to the dictor field because they were using 40% of the cpu....so faust ... "dumbed" them up....so basicly their a bit stupid now lol....
hopfully it should be fixed within the next couple of patches soon

well, could it be because you were 300 gu away from a planet, and the planet size was another 500-600 gu, so that would total about a thousand?

i believe distance from planet is measured from center, not surface, i may be wrong though.....
