I was just thinking of some way to make certain areas of the MV even more player-innovation-useable and tacticaly important, and had an idea (some inspiration from C:FW): Special Nebulae that would produce natural energy fields that had various effects on players, such as:
Jump Disruption
Beam Enhancing/Degenerating
Speed slowing/increasing
Shield Enhancing/Degenerating
Hull Degenerating
Sensor distortion, ships appear away from where they are or mislabeled
Torpedo malfunctioning, torps may explode prematurely or turn into 'duds'
Jumpfuel increasing/degenerating
Reactor Containment Degrading (read: stay too long, your ship goes boom)
thats all I can think of...

Good idea but some features could be impossible to do I think
