Well in the spare time I have while waiting for HalOS to go back up I'll outline something I've been thinking about for some time.
It would make sense for players to be specialized in a certain aspect of combat, such as combat, bombing, supply, transport etc.
Let's see... there are 6 stat categories in which you are awarded badges: Combat, Bomber, Transport, Support, Engineering and Navigation.
Perhaps you could have 1 Gold badge, 2 Silver badges, and 3 Bronze badges. Of course this would limit your ship selection, and of course it would not work with the current ship requirements, but I'm under assumption that they'll be revamped to make sense.
Having higher levels of Combat, would allow you to get better combat ships.
Higher Bomber levels would let you get more menacing bombers (like the new ICC bomber dread I've been hearing about with 9 MiRV bays).
Transport would let you have, well... more advanced transports, and Gold might let you get the current Station (which we need more of BTW).
Support would also have to do with advance supply ships/stations.
Engineering... I really don't know, maybe build more advanced/special
buildings.
Navigation I have no clue, maybe there could be hyperspace gates or something, and of course you'll have to have been around a lot to fly Dreads etc.
Just some very general ideas off the top of my head, it'd be cool to have more specialized stuff. Political leaders could have special ships and stuff too... All this is assuming 1482 will balance ships out and make it so they have the firepower and abilities they're intended to.

I like...
Let me elaborate on what he's trying to say..
Let's say you have a GOLD Enginering badge...You would get special building powers (like cheaper structures, faster build time, etc) then somebody who had only a SILVER..
Actualy i have my own idea on this..
You CHOOSE which you want....for example, when you sign up you choose wether you want to sepcialize in Supply, Combat, Bombing, Engineering, Capturing, or FTL speeds
breaking it down
For those you choose SUPPLY
Advantage: ALL supply ships have +1 drone bay and +1 armor/shield FULL slot.
Disadvantages: Any ship you pilot besides supply ships are two times as slower to repair, and weaker in combat
For those that choose COMBAT:
Advantages: All ships have +1 full armor/shield slot and more torps/railguns/sabots/missles. Also, reload time is twice as fast, and ships are MUCH cheaper to buy
Disadvantages: Unable to choose Transport, supply, Engineer or dictor Ships
For those that choose BOMBING:
Advantages: MIRV/PCM/BIO-BOMBS carry two times the ammount as normal. Faster reload times for MIRV/PCM/BIO. +1 full armor/shield slot
Disadvantages: All other ships are noticably weaker, and transport ships are not available
For those that choose ENGINEERING:
Advantages: Drones build faster, strucutres are 50% cheaper. Engineering ships have +1 full armor/shield slot, while having a better designed hull
Disadvantages: All other ships are noticable weaker
For those that choose CAPTURING
Advantages: Transports hold +5 more, and have +1 full armor/shield slot. Also, all ships start off with two veteran troops
Disadvantages: All other ships are noticably weaker, while bombing ships are not avilable
For those that choose FTL speeds:
Advantages: All ships have +3gu MAX speed (and are faster to accelerate), and jumpdrives are 1.5x faster. Also, Dictor comes with one reactor 1500, and +1 armor/shield full slot
Disadvantages: All ships hull are weaker then normal
Also, make not that when you choose your "style" you CANNOT go back for at LEAST 3 monthes. Also, you do not HAVE to pick a style, and anyone that does has a little icon in their profile, desigating what style, and during the game it would read name (fleet)(name)(style)

Well Fattie kinda something like that, but here I'm trying not to be specific, just introduce a general concept of players being specialists in certain areas.

Yeah, choosing and switching would be good.
Maybe a day, or a week between switching, not infrequent enough for people to feel strapped down, but not short enough that they can switch to whatever they want when going into the MV or something...
