Part 17: Push
With the ICC eradicated, the Empire left only a few ships in every system, turning their attention towards the UGTO. The Hive had arrived at the gate to the Wolf 359 system, ready to enter.
Talons and Stingers in the system have reported no gate activity, my Queen, reported an acolyte.
Very well. We will enter immediately, replied the Queen.
At the other side, the fleet prepared to head for Wolf 1, to establish a beachhead. The barren planet provided little resistance, and surrendered when a Clavate started bombing it's domes. From there, the next logical step was Ocotat, the terran planet on the fringes of the Wolf 2 cluster.
The UGTO fleet in high orbit around Ocotat expected this, but contrary to K'luth predictions, they didn't flee. They chose to stay close to the planet though, letting their missiles and fighters soften up the K'luth fleet. Several Agincourt class Carrier Dreadnoughts hid behind he planet, launching masses of A-34 "Panther" Assault Fighters, known to pack an even bigger punch, thanks to their Phoenix Missiles, than the K'luth "Larvae" Fighters.
Soon enough, Battle Dreadnoughts and Cruisers started firing their long range cannons; Torpedo Cruisers and a few Elite Assault Dreadnoughts had refitted to fusion torpedoes, for their longer range and better tracking, started firing shortly after.
The Hive kept its pace, slowly creeping towards the planet. Smaller vessels sped ahead to start skirmishing with the UGTO support vessels, eager to destroy them. They steered clear of Dreadnoughts, unable to handle the damage a heavy Chemical Laser battery can dish out. But as they entered beam range of the smaller vessels, strange yellowish beams emanated from the UGTO ships.

Part 18: Retreat
The new Human weapon is dangerous my Queen! Struck ships report heavy system damage. Automatic repairing cannot fully compensate! The confusion was great, for this new weapon posed a gerat threat. With heavy system damage, the ships would be unable to fire or even move.Stay out of beam range! Use torpedoes and missiles only, and disruptors if they do get close. This was not looking good. The humans intended to use their new technology advantage to the maximum. They stayed close together and to the planet.
Everyone target that Dreadnought... Fire! Hundreds of torpedoes roared towards the targetted Battle Dreadnought. Seeing the threat, the surrounding swarm of escorts tried to get out in vain. As the Dreadnought exploded, many of them were caught in the blast and heavily damaged, some even destroyed. [i]Finish them and target the next Dreadnought.{/i]
The humans realized staying out of beam range was only delaying their demise. Apparently the new Flux technology worked well, judging by how reluctant the K'luth were to get in their own beam range. From now on they would have their beams available for point defence, pretty much nullifying the fighter and missile barrages the UGTO launched.
The human fleet retreated to Az, and refitted most of their ships with torpedoes and cannons, save for the Carrier Dreadnoughts, who weren't suited to be more than a mobile sensor and fighter platform.
Battle reports from Ocotat's surface were scarce, since few soldiers were left there, and the civilians were unable to resist. Regrouped at the icy planet, the fleet deployed a minefield, and stsrted waiting for the inevitable.
