I recomend we get rid of this stupid going under other ships as they pass you, its just plain silly, we need collisions, damaging destructable collisions of death, would teach you to be carefull. The going under another ship should only be allowed if planned, such as during docking. Would be awesome to see two enemys collide with each other and destroy 40 percent of each others hull as they spin out of controll and shatter against each other, just like in real life car collisions, am I the only one who thinks this is a neat idea?

This would bring rise to all sorts of new tactics, "we need more dreads and stations for the barricade!!", now that would be team work. Would be nice to see a station be ripped to shreads when it trys to jump into an enemy fleet, severly damaing the ships that it hit (hey at least it would get rid of the station jump-in sding huh?)

I would be using this tactic the most, I would find it awesome to plow through a group of newbies in scouts and frigets and destroyers, using my dread as a ship plow. Perhaps this could cause a new ship to be made? The dreadnought class plow ship.

I donno, seems fun ^.^

In a 2D environment this is not plausible.

How about this. Near warnign System for same team or side. Doesn't allow you to smash or hit your side's ships. So you would go under them.

Now enemy ships you woudl RAM or accidently run into. Would be funny seeing this little scout smashing into my dread. But at a cost to me and him. It woudl change allof this tatics of going under adn mining the crap out fo some one. Or just scarifice yourself for the team. But you can SD and acheive the same thing...

There isn't enough space to evade a target that is actively trying to ram you during a fleet combat scenerio. Also, maneuverability of large ships, such as dreadnoughts is often too low to avoid unintentional collisions.

Ship to ship collision ugh....

This is something we considered very very early in the development of DarkSpace. Problem is ... many people would slam their ship into you as a last resort... I don't think thats the kind of game play we want to encorage.

the easy ramming makes it exciting, giving advantages and disadvantages to the different factions, well at least make fighters rammable X_X

Not very good in DS under it's current system.

We had this a LOOOOOOOOONG time ago. It was terrible.

Firstly, the fact that we are constraigned to the 2D plane makes it very unwieldy.

Secondly, you can take a station, and jump INTO an enemy fleet as a form of SD, and inflict even MORE damage.

Thirdly, our current weapon ranges are such that the gameplay can't rectify having to get close for weapons, yet stay away for fear of collisions.

Fourthly, our hitboxes are perfect spheres. They need to conform MUCH more closely to ship shapes first.

Perhaps, when all four points are addressed, we could do this again. Heck, I'd be willing to try if just two three out of the four points are addressed. Not before then, however.

BTW: This is what the Collision Alert sound was originally meant for.

Not a good idea. If this were a true 3d game with movement in all axes it would be great. But since we're all stuck on the same 2d plane it would create all the wrong tactics (wrong for a space game that is) like really easy to set up barricades.

Remeber just how limited our movement is here And remember that scene in Star Trek II when they used Khan's linear 2d thinking against him (like he was thinking of earthly naval combat) and came up from underneath (underneath from Khan's perspective; from Enterprise's perspective, Khan was in front of them and tilted cuz there IS no up or down or upside down or anything in space. Not like on earth where even if you're flying in the atmosphere you can be upside down. 3d space is interesting )

Ramming fighters? Sounds like Freespace 2...

You allready have one!

its the little button usually towards the top of the PC case, its hidden, you hit the button and it appears, hit it again and it retracts. Some people say its also used for something called CDs but i dont get what a cup holder and a bank statment have in common, go figure.
