Indeed, it's a misconception that Fusion Reactors=Big Boom-Boom, not like those Warp Core thingies on Star Trek. Sneeze in the general direction and the thing goes critical

On subject, maybe if the same destruction system went into other areas, like weapons. A direct hit to the magazine of some Ptorps could cause a good-sized explosion and take a chunk out of your ship. Same with other weapons, like missiles.

hey, when my fusion reactors blow, they do a LOT of damage. To ME.

And he's right; Fusion reactors would not "blow". there'd be destruction, certainly, but no explosion.

*EDIT*

The destruction is due to, in the case of a worst-case systems failure in which the containment field just switches off (for whatever reason) and all backups fail (unlikely), well then we have a small piece of plasma at star-temperature existing in the middle of a bunch of metal. let's just say, there'll be a lot of melting.
