Emergency stop IS realistic. It would simply be a couple, nose-mounted thrusters. They fire when you press s**t-e and each thruster has one "ammo". In oother words you can only use it once before you have to reload it or even buy a new one because all of the juice is used up in one thrust.

StarFleet Command has an emergency stop. You stop dead in the span of a second, but are totally immobile for a time after that (I don't play it, so I don't know how long).

This is the much talked about "destroyed engines aim bug".

Basically, the game sees three values. The speed you are set to, the speed you are going, and the speed your engines are set to. Now, normally the speed you are going and the speed your engines are set to is the same value. However, when your engines are destroyed, they are still set to a speed, but your ship stops, because they are no longer affecting the speed you are going.

hehe that could be irritating instant stopping in combat

o wel i like to see this hapen
but than again if i remember correctly F told me once that
that would mean a major over hall of the movment of all ships ect.

I'd like to point out that "INSTANT stopping" is somewhat unrealistic. Stopping very, very quickly, is more reasonable.

Whatever energy provides the force for the present deceleration would simply have to be enhanced so it could do the same amount of work over less time.

If you can jump while moving, you could set a jump for about 250gu+leadtime to hit J, it'd be easy.

Well not quite an instant stop but a very fast stop would be nice. Because me and im sure a lot of people don't pay attention sometimes and have no way to stop when going for a planet.

It would be neat if an astroids type moving system was implmented once the engines started getting damaged... the ship wouldent have enough power to stay on its current curse as it turned therefore it would start swerving sideways, would be cool, wouldent it? Would be like the more damaged your engines are versus the speed your going determines the ammount of astroids-movement your getting. BTW im not sure.... is astroids the game im thinking of? Was there another name for it? I dont know, you shoudlent know what im thinking. If you did you would be telepathic and that would suck. No one should hear whats in my mind, anyway back on subject, pancakes are verry nice.
