As a Station wielding Meglomaniac who is out of touch with the present Newbie player-base, I have the following opinion:

1. Demorian's idea is quite sound, fair and good intentioned, however, as some have pointed out, the casual player doesn't want to sit infront of a planet for 30 minutes watching the research tic down.

Should the player that only plays Doom-Space be limited in some ways compared to the player that is well-rounded and knowledgeable?

-Sure!

Should Doom-Space player be limited in ships and rank outside of the present system already in place?

-I don't think so...

If a player has 50,000 prestige points only from hull damage, then that player should be a Fleet Admiral...they just won't be able to fly an EAD.

Let's Compromise!

-Instead of penalizing players with limited Engineering prestige but high rank by not allowing them to such specialized ships as: The Command Dread... why not make that the only Dread ship available to them?

Sure, your a FA, but you got no Supply points (hard to fathom) no Transport badge (probally got atleast Silver) and no engineering points (wholly possible possible): you qualify for: Gun Boat Dessy, Hvy Cruiser , Command Dread (oh and the Carrier/Missle Dread/K'luth equivalant...just none of the Assault versions)

A fella with no engineering points flying in a Command Dread is bound to build something, which means he is bound to learn and earn some prestige...and if not, Command Dreads are juicy targets!

I believe this argument stems from FA's locking planets who have no business doing so... well, they are FA's, which means they got some experience, even if it is merely following a dread around in a supply ship for 2 months.

I agree with juxtapose.. it is better to provide the ability to specialise then force someone how he should play. just make a station require all badges

(just a reminder: the best mmorpgs are also the ones that offer the most freedom).

I was impressed when someone made FA and didn't have gold supply yet. That's pretty hardcore.

I don't really see any need for a change here. Some people will always prefer and/or have an aptitude for different roles. We can only hope they will be honest and admit they suck at building planets when asked to build. They'll never get any better without practice, though.

I have to agree with Ves on this one: if you are a total schlub at planet construction, do the world a favor, and defend the planet, don't hurt your team and try to build it at the crucial times in the game (I'm speaking of FAs, of course....newbies should have a chance to learn like we all did). If you suck in combat, grab a supply, or build something.

As a wise man once told me while I was in the push-up position, "Know your role, and shut your hole."

Just read your post Juxtapose and in it say that people who get all thier press from combat should not be allowed to fly the COMBAT dreads, but only the command dread. Hmmm. Lets see:

The Command Dread:
OK Bomber
Crappy Fighter
Basically a Supa-engy
Would be well suited for someone who likes building but doesn't like being killed in 2 shots (i.e. the engineers)

The Elite Assualt Dread
Good combat ship
Is really only suited for bashing other ships with likes torpedos and beams and/or serving as a troop transport.

According to your system Juxtapose, the player who spends equal amounts of time building, supplying, fighting, and capping would get the Super Combat Ship, while the player who likes fighting, thinks building is as exciting as watching teh grass grow and doesnt like having to dance when someone whistles for a supply would be given the Super-Engineer that has limited if any combat capabilites.

Now I'm just a guy who could fit in to the Quake-player category, but I would think the people who spend all their time fighting (thus getting more expirenece at fighting) would better serve their faction controlling the Combat ships, and NOT the command/engineer/bombing ships.

As a Compromise to Demorian's suggestion, Yes! That's exactly my point Bad_Skeetz!

We shouldn't penalize folks who aren't well rounded by preventing them from attaining rank they justly deserve!

They can still fly a limited number of Dreads: Missle/Fighter...including the Non-Combat Specialty Dreads: Command but NOT special Assault Combat Dreads and not Bomber Dreads (I should have mentioned that before)

It's the carrot approach... Yes, they can fly the Uber-Engineering ships, if they want to, and maybe, just maybe they will use them...and if they do:

Viola! The Assault Ships open up for them (the present method does require a fair amount of badges for these anyway)

The Well-Rounded players....those who don't aspouse Combat above all things! They might get their EAD's earlier...and maybe those will encourage them to be better Warriors!

Oh...and by the way...

Look at my prestige...I got most of it from combat, not the other stuff...but in the end, knowing the other aspects of the game has come in handy, from time to time (like knowing how fast an engineer can accelerate and plotting your attack on one to compensate for it )
