Well its how I would let it work.

It kinda silly to get a stock ship out and upgrade it to max immediately thats just wrong like you said.

mm hope there wil be a limit top upgrading to next level
other wise you just go and whit to people in a backyard system for like 3 days
think of this the UGTO assault scout whit level 193 armor
level 529 particle cannons
level 84 Torp
level 18 jump drive
level 45 engines

if so that scout could take on a dread

YEah there should of course be a limit.

On the otherhand; if the Required resources keep going up with every level and people could bomb Research bases off planets to reset this research you might actually get some interesting gameplay

Hold on-in response to the original post, red diamonds = no. Remember the topics you have to research to build the lasers and you'll remember that CL stands for Chemical Laser.

That's the only thing wrong with your idea...go for it!

I'm all for this... as far as cheesy insight... all i can offer is a nice scenario from the game EV: Nova. A player could get rich very quickly by mining the opal asteroids in a particular system there, and then sell said opals at the starport, but it was for that reason that pirate ships were very common there- basically it was mine, run, shoot, kill, mine; or mine, run, run, run, die/flee. Made mining all sexed-up.

WOOOT WOOOT!!! The EV series, best space based RPG I ever played. Tons if customizable ships, all kinds of missions, and a good open story line(you decide for yourself what you become in the universe). Dark Space could learn alot from this game, especially in regards to the modding system.

If you make the game pace in MV any slower you may as well let it die.

Forcing mining to upgrade is a bad idea. after 1.481 there may be times when you're forced to mine anyway due to shipyards running out of resoruces...but it will never be mandatory in the MV (time will replenish the shipyard too).

Ok, besides the low number of people playing in the MV, what's it's #1 complaint? Game pace! People are upset that you have to spend 10 minutes just to get to a battle (pre 1.481 but still), I can't imagine what they'd say if they had to spend hours in a hostile system mining!
