Large tracts of empty space occupy some space on servers.

Also, large empty areas make it more difficult to find other players/bases/etc.

Realistic sized planets would look terrible due to the texture system this game engine uses.

Realistic sized planets would be a major pain in the rear for manuvering and navigation.

My personal opinion is that even with some form of faster drives in the game, a realistically proportioned systems/planets/stars would not enhance gameplay a great deal, and would degrade it in some ways a noticable ammount.

Perhaps things can be proportioned differently, but I do not feel that realistic proportions would be constructive to overally gameplay at this time.

The jump times would not increase in time, infact, similiar distance jumps might actually be faster if your ship didn't just travel at one speed for jumps.

Short jumps would be slower than now (which might help with combat jumping and alpha strikes) but longer jumps would allow your ship to travel faster and faster until you reach some sort of preset break point.

That way the planets and ships would looke correct AND jump times would not be lengthened.
