I was thinking of an older movie, with special effects like in the early Godzilla movies.

The original Japanese anime was retitled StarBlazers for release in America in the 80's. There has been talk for years about making a live action movie.
This looks good but the music doesnt match.
The original 80's story line is an alien race named Gamalans bombard Earth with a poison/radiation thats destroying the Earth. All life on the surface has died, the oceans have dried up. The only hope is an expidition to the Gamalans home planet to retrieve the cure for the plague and restore Earth before a year passes and all hope of reversing it is lost.
They accomplish the task in the first season, the second season they go back to war with other ships supporting them. It only lasted two seasons in America but it gave rise to Japanese Anime in America and helped launch Robotech and another one I cant remember but had a space pirate... Well, I don't wanna release any spoilers, so all I can say is this.
They've given the movie a bit of the "Transformers live action movie" treatment. That is to say, they altered the storyline a bit to fit within the movie's running time.
Then there's also the "realism" factor where they have to throw out the cartoonish or 'childish' things to cater to a more adult audience.
But Japs being Japs, they're more faithful to canon. So no complete Yamato reboot here.
However, the alien Gamilas aren't the blue humanoids as in the cartoon. They're more.... alien.
