I said I woudl explain the clues, so here goes...
The first clue was actually posted in the event description, giving the surname of the Pirate Lord (McCormic).
Combined with the link to the beta history, this should have resulted in players finding out the first name, Robin. There were NO other relevant clues in the History Galactica.
Once you had the full name, it should have only been a matter of time before someone decided to do a profile search.
I decided early on that the profiles would be the key to unlocking the locations of the stations.
Strangely enough the first profile to be found was the Pirate Station profile, which meant I had to come up with a completely new clue list.... but still
Anyway, lets explain the Pirate Staion profile:
Username Pirate Station
User ID 134118
Registration Date August 17, 2006
Last Login August 24, 2006
Location -G.U.R.F M0DUT1
Rank Grand Admiral
Signature:
"Captain: Lalalalala!
Navigator: Now which way was Tortuga?"
The only parts relevant to the actual event were obviosuly, the name, ID, location and signature.
Each profile has a set of co-ordinates, a distance, the name of the system these two pieces of information are relevant to, and the approximate destination.
In the Pirate profile, the Captain is saying "Lalalalala!".
No, he isn't humming a tune. Poor Captain Watson has a stutter, and is actually referring to the system of Lalande.
The Navigator is then asking the way to Tortuga, which is effectively the destination of the station. This is also pointing players to take a look at tortuge, for the other part of the clue.
If you were to have gone and taken a close up look, you would have found R148 written on the planet. Somehwat amazingly, this piece of information was not uncovered until quite late on into the event....
You now have all the information you need here, other than the actual co-ordinates and distance, which were encoded by the using a telephone keypad.
I spent a few hours trying to come up with a good way of encrypting the information. the problem was thinking of something that everyone would have a chance of discovering, and wouldn't require a degree in cryptology to break.
For me, the telephone seemed an obvious choice. It is something that is the same internationally, and nearly everyone uses one every day.
Simply entering the letters into the keypad gives you the associated numers, hence you have the co-ordinates and distance.
The next clue posted was 1EGATA. It was very amusing to see all the different idea's and responses that people had to this. It is infact, McCormics player ID, encrypted using telephone code.
Clue three, ET phone home:
It was obvious people were clueless about the co-ordinates and clue 2, so I asked in modchat for idea's on a clue to help people out.
Doran's response was pure genius, ET phone home...
What does ET do in the movie? He phones home. The clue is TELLING you to go and pick up a phone...
Also, in space, were are all extra-terrestrials. ET is referring to the players themselves, IE you.
One person got this within 5 minutes of the clue being posted, and I have to congratulate YIIMM here. He was far ahead of everyone else in this competition, and it's sad that he couldn't have been aorund to see it through.
Clue 4: 1EG11T
This was posted because still no one else has worked out the code.
It is the Pirate Station accounts player ID. I am VERY suprised that no one notice the obvious relation of the numbers... but still.
Clue 5) Robin McCormics profile.
Some one finally found his profile, and gave the infomation out publicly.
Again, the data in the profile follows the same format as the Priate Station profile.
Username Robin McCormic
User ID 134282
Registration Date August 22, 2006
Last Login August 25, 2006
Occupation Pirate - Deceased
Location -1B.I.-L.S EN0R0C
Signature:
"Into the hallowed darkness I fly. The space between; procyon voice of an eon, I dream of the sun filled seas.
Soon I will rest once more, home at last.
Captains Log 18/5/2145
That damned raccoon is playing with the ships wiring aga"
Into the hallowed darkness I fly - This is telling you that the station is not in a star system.
The space between = The space between.
procyon voice of an eon, - procyon, the star. "Voice of an eon" is referring to something long lived. Which stars are....
I dream of the sun filled seas - The event is pirate related and started shortly after Pirates of the Carribean released. Carribean seas are typicaly sunny....
This is a reference to the Carribean Whirlpool, which is one of the pirate spawn locations.
If you do a goolge search you will come up with many results saying racoon, genus procyon... This part is again courtesy of Doran.
The clue here is saying that procyon is interfering with the station wiring... not some rabid, copper starved raccoon.
Clue 6: Five is to two as four is to one.
If you look at the clues, it is telling you that clue five, is to clue two, as clue four is to clue one.
At this point, players still had not worked out that clues 4 and 2 were the players ID's.
Clue 7:
No one had yet noticed the buildings on Tortuga.
Clue 8: Somewhere over the rainbow...
Still no one had noticed the buildings on Tortuga, despite the previous clue...
What is as the end of a rainbow? A pot of gold...
Where is gold mentioned, or seen in the Event? Clue 7...
Clue 9: Jack Sparrow is/was a notorious Pirate Of...
No one had worked out the vague reference to the Carribean.
Clue 10: This requires a thread in itself to explain... Maybe later

Hey, I got the phone code and the ID correlation by myself.... -.-
So it WAS distance? I don't get it....so it was referring to a place where it had those coordinates and was that much far away from...where?

I found a spot the correct distance from Tortuga with the correct coordinates, which seems to have been the wrong approach, I tried doing the same thing from Procyon but couldn't find a spot that worked.
[irreverence] On a side note, which may or may not interest you; Procyon the star and Procyon the raccoon mean the same yet get their names for different reasons. Raccoons appear almost like primitive dogs: Pro-cyon, before dog. Procyon the star is so called because in the night sky it rises before the dog star: Sirius. [/irreverence]

Yeah, I thought of that...then thought...."...but how is that related?" and dismissed it...
